Console extras not all needed

With the release of any new console, peripheral manufacturers scramble to release add-ons – some unnecessary, some not – in hopes of being caught in what's affectionately called "launch goggles." (This is when the excitement causes a gamer, wrapped up in the moment of getting a new system, to overspend on games and extra gear.) The Xbox 360 is surrounded by no shortage of goodies, but if the goggles are in effect, consider GelTabz rubber nubs ($5.99) that snugly fit over the analog sticks of the 360 controllers. They make an already comfy controller feel better, especially when held in a death grip while smashing trolls in "Kameo" or dropping Nazis in "Call of Duty 2." GelTabz also fit PlayStation 2 and Xbox controllers. Cable TV

On the Web: Wheely weird Once there was a time when scaring children was thought to be the only way to teach them a lesson. Consider the 1963 bicycle safety film "One Got Fat," directed by Dale Jennings and available for viewing at www.archive.org/ details/OneGotFa1963.

Seeking informative, up-to-date sources

I have a request. It's related to something I'd like to practice more diligently in the new year. When you get a free moment, send me the names of newspapers, magazines, newsletters, books or Web sites that you read to keep up on LGBTQ issues. The number of places to look for news and opinions is overwhelming, and part of me wants to shrink from the desire to read, but then I succumb to the hope to be more aware and seek up-to-date reporting and perspectives. The thing is, I know there are good sources that I have yet to discover. And, I know there are publications bent toward political positions to the right of mine that could be extremely useful in expanding my understanding of what and how my fellow citizens think. So, bring it on. Feed me some titles and Web addresses.

Workplace jealousy - hold your ground

Q I'm a 27-year-old woman who works in a mostly male office. I'm not romantically involved with anybody there, but I have to admit I enjoy my role as the cute, young thing. Recently, two younger girls were hired, and I can't help feeling like I've been replaced. What should I do?

Easing into grandparenthood

When my partner, Molly, and I visited my family this past summer, there was much ado in Southern California, what with grooming the yards and spiffing up the spare bedrooms. Now it's our turn to do the same. Though, we don't have a yard, and the spare room is our writing studio. Sheesh, well, nonetheless my dad and stepmom are coming to visit. Our ado is more along the lines of dusting and vacuuming, decorating for the holidays and building the Lego train to circle the Christmas tree. The hanging of the ornaments will be left until my parents arrive. We figure the temperature in these northern climes will shock their blood just enough to warrant a cozy afternoon inside, sipping hot cocoa and decking out the tree, on their first day here.

Game plan: rent rather than buy

Smart gamers rent games before they buy. The sites work the same, charging your credit card monthly to rent at least one game for as long as you want. Go to the Web site and pick the games you want to rent and arrange the order you want them in. This is called your queue. Place your order, and your first two games will arrive by mail in a few days. Play as long as you want – there are no late fees – and use the included envelope to return the games without paying postage.
