Man Arrested On Felony Warrants After Traffic Stop

A Spokane Valley man named on six Grant County felony warrants was arrested Tuesday after he was stopped for a traffic violation. Wade Lee Phillips, 27, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on the warrants, which include charges of burglary and robbery. The warrants carry bonds totaling $30,000.

Valley Herald, Valley News Form Single Paper

Journal News Publishing Co., the parent company of the Spokane Valley News, on Wednesday bought The Valley Herald. Journal News Publishing plans to merge the two newspapers later this month and produce a weekly paper known as the Spokane Valley News-Herald, publisher Bill Ifft said.

Rockford Man Held In Shooting Of Cousin

A Rockford man accused of shooting his cousin last weekend was ordered held on $15,000 bail Tuesday during his first appearance in District Court. James Donald McElfish, 60, was arrested early Saturday and booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree assault.

Shooting Suspect Nabbed At Restaurant

A teenager who reported being shot at last week spotted the suspected shooter early Saturday at a Spokane Valley fast food restaurant. Sheriff's deputies arrested David Duane Primm, 21, at the Taco Bell at Sprague and University. Primm, who gave 12707 E. Fourth as his address, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree reckless endangerment.

Brothers Charged With Theft Of Boat Motors From Yard

Sheriff's deputies arrested two men early Tuesday after more than $3,000 worth of boating equipment was stolen from behind a Spokane Valley house. Michael T. Walls, 27, and Wendell A. Walls, 31, were booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree theft, a felony. The brothers, who both gave a 12002 E. Fourth address, were being held Thursday in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Lifetime Chester resident Sally Gerimonte remembers the spring of 1950, when what is now Painted Hills Golf Course was completely under water. Gerimonte, 61, also recalls spring runoff flooding the road leading to the original Chester Elementary. "We used to have to walk through water to get to school," she said.

Robber Slashes Man In Drive-Through Lane At Walgreens Rxpress

A 24-year-old man narrowly escaped serious injury Wednesday night when he was robbed at knifepoint while waiting in his car at a drive-through pharmacy in the Spokane Valley. Two men who had been standing next to a Dumpster near the drive-up window at Walgreens Rxpress, 12200 E. Sprague, robbed the man while he waited behind several other cars to pull up to the window.

Man Injured In Fight With Intruder

A 36-year-old man was awakened by an intruder early Sunday and beaten at his west Spokane Valley home. Sheriff's deputies arrested Frank E. Dunphy, 23, for the attack a few minutes later. Dunphy, who was found nearby, matched the description of the intruder given by the victim, deputies said.

Collie’s ‘Severe’ Bite Injures Modern Electric Meter Man

A dog that once tried to bite an animal control officer attacked a 60-year-old meter reader Wednesday morning in the Spokane Valley. John Riley, a Modern Electric Water Co. employee, received several stitches at Valley Hospital and Medical Center to close a gash in his left forearm. Riley told animal control officers the collie attacked him about 9 a.m. in the driveway at 1508 N. Oberlin.

State Sending $7.5 Million To Protect Drinking Water Department Of Ecology Money Will Help Pay For Sewer Installations Throughout Aquifer Area

Spokane County commissioners announced this week that the county was awarded $7.5 million for the protection of the Spokane Valley's major source of drinking water. The state Department of Ecology money will help pay for sewer installations throughout the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie aquifer area, said Chad Hutson, county spokesman. About 30,000 septic tanks are to be removed. The funds are part of a 20-year, $100 million grant Department of Ecology awarded to Spokane County and the city of Spokane, Hutson said.

Vandals Tear Up Golf Course, Wreck Carts

Vandals did more than $1,000 in damage and stole four golf carts when they broke into Painted Hills Golf Course last week. At least two people, and as many as four, cut through the chain link fence surrounding a golf cart storage area at the course early Wednesday, sheriff's detectives said. Five carts were taken from the area. One was found damaged about 100 yards away. The other four were recovered Thursday in the woods nearby. They also had been wrecked.
