Meyer on Payton short list

Two days after his career ended with a disappointing playoff loss, Eastern Washington quarterback Erik Meyer was voted one of finalists for the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in I-AA football. "It would be a great honor to be recognized as the best player in Division I-AA; to be recognized with past award winners," Meyer, from LaMirada, Calif., said. "It will also mean a great deal to me because I see that award as a team thing as well. I wouldn't be in this position without great players around me."

Weekend not total loss for Bulldogs

Many local basketball fans, stuffed with turkey Thursday, probably had to turn off their television set before halftime when Gonzaga fell 20 points behind No. 10 Maryland. But after that dismal 20 minutes, the Bulldogs fared much better at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, losing 88-50 to the Terrapins, 79-65 to No. 2 Tennessee and 60-45 to No. 9 Michigan State.

Eagles can’t hold on

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The offense was magnificent for more than three quarters, the defense for one and once again Eastern Washington's trip to the I-AA football playoffs ended in heartbreak. The 15th-ranked Eagles gave up 17 points in the fourth quarter to lose 41-38 to No. 7 Northern Iowa before 7,746 frenzied fans at the UNI Dome Saturday night.

Eastern’s defensive adjustments not enough

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The defensive plan that worked so well when Eastern Washington stymied Montana State and UC Davis to close the regular season was a bust in the playoffs. After the 15th-ranked Eagles found themselves down 24-21 to No. 7 Northern Iowa Saturday night, it was out with the zone and in with more man-to-man.

Eagles tackle Panthers in first round

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Ho hum, another playoff game. It's not that No. 15 Eastern Washington and No. 7 Northern Iowa aren't excited to be meeting in the opening round of the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs tonight at the UNI Dome, but they have been playing playoff-style games since midseason stumbles put their future in doubt.

Blankenship has had Meyer-like start

Maybe, if Josh Blankenship had been hurt three years ago instead of winging his way to Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors, this is how the Erik Meyer story would have begun. It would be about a redshirt freshman quarterback getting thrown to the wolves of I-AA football and performing admirably, then coming back with a superlative sophomore season with the promise of a great career.

Smiles a long time coming

The smile on Jake Young's face and the twinkle in his eyes weren't always there. Certainly not during all the time he spent building himself up to be a college football player and certainly not when injuries slowed his progress. And probably not last Saturday afternoon when he was wiping all the disappointments away.

Eastern Washington University football coach Paul Wulff and former Eagle coach Mike Kramer completed a hat trick on Tuesday. Wulff and Kramer, the Montana State coach, shared the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year award after both teams finished 7-4, beat Montana and shared the conference title with the Grizzlies. It is the third award for both.

Eagles shred UC Davis, receive boost into playoffs

UC Davis, trailing Eastern Washington 7-0, was driving at midfield with 6:30 left in the first quarter when the Eagles clinched a berth in the I-AA football playoffs Saturday afternoon. That's when the clock ran out on No. 22 Montana State's 16-6 win over No. 3 Montana in Bozeman.

Fresh faces lift Eagles

A year ago, when the Eastern Washington men's basketball team was embarking on what would be a disappointing 8-20 season, Rodney Stuckey, Kellen Williams and Nick Livi were sitting out for academic reasons and Matt Penoncello redshirted while nursing a bad back. They studied hard and played a lot of basketball on their own, even in intramurals.

Eastern Washington University football fans who will want to know what's happening in Bozeman on Saturday will need to make arrangements to get updates on the Montana-Montana State game before heading to Woodward Field for the Eagles' regular-season finale. The foundation has been built

Paul Wulff believes Eastern Washington has built a house in the high-rent district of I-AA football, but he gets a little melancholy when he thinks about this year's seniors that helped with the construction. "The impact these guys have had, they've seen so many things change," the sixth-year head coach said. "They've seen the program turn around from the facilities, to becoming a high-level program. We feel now we'll have a Top 25 program year-in and year-out. They brought that foundation to the program, they were kind of the bottom of the house. Now it's up to the other guys to keep that house going."

UI can look forward to erratic WAC schedule

A basketball season, at least on the college level, is like a junior high band. Early in the season teams are all over the place, but when the conference games come around, usually in early January, they settle into a rhythm.
