Ruffled Eagles

SAN JOSE, Calif. – It was the worst-case scenario for Eastern Washington University and indeed, as advertised, "A New Day in San Jose." San Jose State scored 28 unanswered points – despite a turnover inside the Eastern 10-yard line – to start the Dick Tomey Era with a 35-24 victory over EWU Saturday afternoon.

Don’t count out the Grizzlies just yet

For seven seasons the Montana Grizzlies were picked to win the Big Sky Conference football championship and for seven seasons they delivered. At times a team or two team tied the Griz, but no one ever supplanted them as they ran their streak of appearing in the I-AA playoffs to 12 straight years.

Eagles ready to take flight

Say whatever you want, the Eastern Washington football team isn't listening. "We don't get caught up in what's being said," Eagles coach Paul Wulff said. "We get caught up in how we work every day and what our expectations are and our performance. That's where our focus is. What people say doesn't have an impact on what we have to do."

Ride for all it’s worth

Rowdy Buechner has reached a place among the best bareback riders in the country the old-fashioned way – he earned it. "I didn't just wake up in the morning and decide I wanted to do it," Buechner said. "I wanted to do it since I was a little kid. I just didn't have the chance, like lot of guys, to get on practice stock."

Starting jobs are available at Eastern

With a highly regarded, veteran football team it would stand to reason that a preseason scrimmage isn't much more than a dress rehearsal. Any member of the Eastern Washington Eagles that believes that is in for a rude awakening.

Eagles feeling bite of injury bug early

Eastern Washington football coach Paul Wulff doesn't have to worry about the bull's-eye preseason recognition is putting on the Eagle uniforms. Instead of wondering if his team will live up to the expectations that come with Sports Illustrated tabbing the Eags No. 2 among I-AA teams in its latest issue or the No. 4 ranking from The Sports Network poll released last week, Wulff has more pressing concerns.
