Matt Nelson, one of three Eastern Washington University basketball players who decided to transfer after a disappointing 8-30 season, became the second to select a new school. Wildcats sweep Shadle Park, CV

The track and field head coaches at Mt. Spokane have opposite personalities, but they got the same results in big meets Thursday afternoon at Central Valley. Behind calm coach Bryan Payne, the Wildcats won the boys 1,600-meter relay to edge the Bears and previously unbeaten Shadle Park.

Northport’s Butorac pulled off swift one at Pasco

Training in sweats to prepare for heat is a tactic, but running uphill to make the finish seem easier isn't. That's just the way life is in Northport, no big deal to sprint star Chad Butorac, one of just three members of the Mustangs' boys track team.

Area athletes steer clear

Tyler Jolley has been introduced to steroids and that was all he needed to convince himself to stay away. "I met a guy on steroids once," said Jolley, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound junior football lineman and thrower at East Valley. "He was kind of nuts. He talked to me about it. He was a guy who looked like he should weigh 150 weighing about 250. He was massive. Wow! But he was weird and I was like, 'Leave me alone.' " It's clear steroids are out there, but there seems to be little evidence that area high school athletes are knocking down the doors to get to them.

Creatine not magic potion, but can be used safely

Diligent training and proper nutrition are the foundation of success for high school athletes. But creatine, said Daniel Dami, Ph.D., can enhance that foundation if an athlete already works hard, eats right and will use the muscle-building supplement properly.

Love, Tigers have a day to shine in Pasco

Brooks steps away from Eastern staff

Saying he wanted to go "wherever life takes me," Winston Brooks has resigned as an assistant coach with the Eastern Washington men's basketball program. Richmond Sanders cheated on a beautiful Friday afternoon at Woodward Field. But, as the saying goes, it's only cheating if you get caught, and nobody caught Sanders.

EV boys, NC girls cash in

The coaches spent most of Thursday preparing their quarter-milers for a fantastic finish, but what were expected to be close meets didn't turn out that way. The big guns for the East Valley boys and North Central girls did what they needed to do, making the closing Greater Spokane League races at EV anticlimactic.

Eastern’s new running back stands out by just standing still

There weren't too many opportunities for Ryan Cole to stand out during the first day of spring football practice at Eastern Washington University. But stand out he did. Cole stood out even when he was standing around waiting for his turn in drills or plays.

Graves chooses to stay at Gonzaga

Gonzaga University women's basketball coach Kelly Graves canceled a Saturday afternoon interview at Oregon State University and called GU athletic director Mike Roth Saturday morning to tell him he was staying. "I really like it here. This is where I want to be," Graves said after informing his staff of his decision. "I had that feeling all the time. I don't know why I continued to listen (to other offers). I guess it's just nice to know (someone wants you).

Line will show how Eagles line up

With only 12 seniors gone from a team that tied for the Big Sky Conference title and reached the second round of the I-AA football playoffs, it would seem the Eastern Washington University coaching staff only needs spring practice to fine-tune for another big season. Not quite.

Pariseau, Nelson say they leave Eastern with no bitterness

Danny Pariseau and Matt Nelson want to keep playing college basketball. They just decided to take their games elsewhere, with no hard feelings. The two Eastern Washington University starters and reserve Eric Henkel have decided to transfer following the Eagles' 8-20 season.

Pariseau, Nelson won’t return

The bridge between Eastern Washington's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season and a return to the upper echelon of the Big Sky Conference men's basketball standings next season continues to crumble even though the disappointing 8-20 season ended more than two weeks ago. Though only one senior starter – record-breaking Marc Axton – graduates, three other players, including two starters, decided to leave the program.

Eastern signs Oregon State’s Cole to add spark to backfield

Eastern Washington University's stable of running backs got a little bit deeper this week when the Eagles signed Oregon State University transfer Ryan Cole. Cole, a 233-pounder, rushed for 333 yards in two seasons as a backup for the Beavers, including 251 last season. He joins a football team that lost two running backs but few other players from a 9-4 season that included a share of the Big Sky Conference championship and a berth in the I-AA quarterfinals.
