Saints, Griz find local crop

Big doings are going on next door. Well, not quite next door, but they're certainly whooping it up in Montana these days.

All-America honors for four Eagles

Eastern Washington's record-breaking passing combination and two of the linemen who made it possible earned All-America honors. Quarterback Erik Meyer, wide receiver Eric Kimble, tackle Michael Roos and guard Rocky Hanni were selected to The Sports Network Division I-AA All-America teams.

Area women spending some time at home

After padding their frequent-flyer miles, the four area Division I women's basketball teams are finally settling in at home. Gonzaga plays host to Idaho and Washington State entertains Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon to start some pretty good holiday homestands.

Season memorable, future bright for Eastern Washington football

It was quite a run for the Eastern Washington football team. Unlike the 1997 team that reached the semifinals of the I-AA playoffs with an eight-game winning streak, the 2004 Eagles had to scratch and claw their way into the consciousness of area sports fans.

Eagles set bounce-back alarm

Eastern Washington University's men's basketball team has a key game tonight as it goes through its usual difficult December schedule. The Eagles (2-3) face Cal State Fullerton (2-2) at 7:05 at Reese Court, hoping to erase the sting of an 89-56 loss at No. 14 Washington last Sunday.

Eagles fly into ‘hornet’s nest’ at Washington

There are always two extremes on a schedule – the easiest game and the toughest game. The extremes for Eastern Washington University's men's basketball team were theoretically back-to-back, considering they played host to NAIA Division II Cascade College on Wednesday and play at No. 14 Washington this afternoon.

Vigor for new sport

For most of his 21 years, Raul Vijil made big plays with his feet. He was a two-time All-Big Nine Conference soccer player at Pasco, helping the Bulldogs win the State 4A championship as a sophomore and scoring 14 goals as a senior. He also played on the state Olympic Development Team. Nowadays Vijil has to make plays with his hands before he can use his feet to help the Eastern Washington football team.

Eastern finally beats Cascade

It was the home opener against an NAIA Division II opponent without its leading scorer, playing its second game in as many nights. That's why it was no surprise Eastern Washington's two-time All-Big Sky Conference forward Marc Axton poured in 36 points, tying the school record with seven 3-pointers along the way.

Eastern Eagles defensive backs prepare to catch spotlight

Nick Denbeigh predicted he would be a college football player when he was a sophomore at Lewis and Clark High School. He didn't envision he would be a redshirt sophomore starting at rover in the I-AA playoffs for Eastern Washington University.

Eastern welcomes chance to compete at home

On paper, the game is less intriguing than an exhibition, but Eastern Washington men's basketball coach Mike Burns doesn't care. "It's just good to have a home game," the first-year Eagles head coach said. "A home game against anybody would be great right now."

Eagles pleased to host Sam Houston State

The bracket for the I-AA football playoffs is hard to figure, but the Eastern Washington Eagles aren't complaining. The 14th-ranked Eagles (9-3) are home, facing No. 9 Sam Houston State (10-2) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodward Field

A winning strategy

CARDONDALE, Ill. – Eastern Washington was in trouble. Southern Illinois quarterback Joel Sambursky was making like Erik Meyer converting clutch plays, and the Eagles had no answer for 260-pound running back Brandon Jacobs. It was obvious why the Salukis were the No. 1 team in I-AA football. "They were running the ball and converting some seconds-and-long, thirds-and-long, moving the chains and chewing up the clock," Eastern coach Paul Wulff said. "They were snapping the ball with 5 seconds left on the play clock so the tempo was definitely theirs. We were moving the ball but we weren't real sharp."

Two down, one to go. That's road games for the Eastern Washington men's basketball team before it plays its first home game on Wednesday.

Eastern ready for the Salukis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The following is not for the faint of heart. The top-ranked I-AA football team that awaits No. 14 Eastern Washington (8-3) for this afternoon's kickoff at McAndrew Stadium doesn't appear to have any weaknesses.

Eagles soar into playoffs

The chartered airplane lifted off before dawn this morning, taking Eastern Washington to what the school hopes is more than a one-stop or one-year destination. The Eagles' 14th-ranked football team is headed for a showdown with top-ranked Southern Illinois in the first round of the I-AA playoffs Saturday afternoon in Carbondale, Ill.

Chemistry set

Eastern Washington won 17 games for the first time since 1988 and a game in the Big Sky Conference tournament – but that was two years ago. What was supposed to the start of big things wasn't as last year the Eagles stumbled to a 13-16 record, 5-9 in the Big Sky.

Climbing the ladder

At times during the final game of last season, an upset win against Arizona State, Washington State had five freshmen on the floor. That provided optimism for the future.

Eagles back for more

Eastern Washington sailed through uncharted waters last year and the Eagles have no intention of turning back. The Eagles won their first Big Sky Conference men's basketball championship, hosted the conference tournament and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

They’re contenders

Whitworth women's basketball coach Helen Higgs has plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Four reasons are returning starters Tiffany Speer, Sarah Shogren, Dani Bielec and Wenchi Liu.

Upping the ante

The goal is obvious – and it's not to have three-consecutive winning seasons for the second time in school history. No, this Gonzaga women's basketball team has its sights set on a much bigger prize.

‘We won’t be overlooked’

Emily Faurholt scored 29 points in her first Division I basketball game and never quit scoring. Idaho won that game and rarely quit winning. By the time the league season rolled around, Faurholt was among the best scorers in the nation and the Vandals were 8-1.
