New coach likes what he’s getting into at Eastern

The whistle sounded the same and the man blowing it was familiar, but it is definitely a different combination as the Eastern Washington men's basketball team sets out to build on its most successful Division I season. The welcoming whistle was blown by Mike Burns when the Eagles reported for the first time as members of the exclusive Big Dance Club.

Eastern cleans slate for Weber

OGDEN, Utah – The pressing question as the Eastern Washington football team prepares to take on winless Weber State this afternoon is: Can Montana beat the Eagles twice? The Grizzlies did it on the field last weekend, 31-28, by blocking a short last-minute field goal. Now Eastern must block Montana from its mind while moving on to another game.

Griz deny EWU

The difference between a team that has won or shared eight of the last nine Big Sky Conference football championships and one hoping to win its first since 1997 is timing. Montana continually made clutch plays, the last a blocked field goal by Shane MacIntyre with 18 seconds to play, allowing the fifth-ranked Grizzlies to escape Woodward Field on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon with a scintillating 31-28 victory over No. 23 Eastern Washington that kept 10,754 fans on edge.

Eastern tries to keep focus

Paul Wulff is trying to convince his 23rd-ranked Eastern Washington football team that today's game is just another game. It would be … if the opponent weren't the Montana Grizzlies; if about 11,000 fans weren't expected; if both teams weren't ranked; and if the lead in the Big Sky Conference weren't at stake.

Eastern lineman Roos on fast track of success

Like so many Eastern Washington football players, Michael Roos has taken a somewhat meandering path to become a stalwart for the Eagles. But unlike most, Roos' path is a lot different even if it is much shorter.

EWU rolls up big numbers after starting 0-2

Eastern Washington University started the football season 0-2 by falling behind 30-0 and 21-0 in road games, but since then the Eagles have been amazing. Three times EWU has scored in the first minute of the second quarter and twice in the closing seconds before halftime.

Meyer’s arm, legs baffle PSU

PORTLAND – The numbers may indicate that Eastern Washington University whipped Portland State University 41-21 at PGE Park Saturday night on Erik Meyer's arm. But the typically staggering numbers for the junior quarterback were as much about his feet as they were his right arm.

Vikings are no pushover

PORTLAND – Even with showdowns against 20th-ranked Northern Arizona and seventh-ranked Montana up next, the Eastern Washington football team faces what could be a make-or-break game. The Eagles (2-2, 1-0 Big Sky Conference) are at Portland State (2-1) tonight at 6 at PGE Park in the Big Sky opener for the Vikings.

Eastern, ISU bring fireworks

Eastern Washington-Idaho State is not considered one of the Big Sky Conference football rivalries, but the two teams are developing a history. The last eight games — the first six EWU wins — have produced wildly entertaining offense. Last year ISU's 55-52 double-overtime win in Pocatello created the added edge of injuries that upset the Eagles at the time.

Expect plenty of action when Eastern Washington plays ISU

The last fireworks show in the area could come on Saturday night when Idaho State visits Woodward Field to open the Big Sky Conference football season. Not only did Eastern lose 55-52 at Pocatello last year, there was a little bad blood after the double-overtime game.

Most of the damage took place in the first 15 minutes, 13 seconds when the Eagles soared to a 36-0 lead, delighting the crowd of 6,425.

EWU unveils new look

The donor suites and media center at Eastern Washington's remodeled Woodward Field will be all but done when the Eagles kick off against Central Washington tonight. "It will be right up against Friday night, but we will have it done with the exception of minor things the public won't even notice," EWU athletic director Scott Barnes said. "The only exception is the stair towers won't be painted."

Big No. 99 was noticeably absent at Eastern Washington football practices this week, but No. 57 sure was an attention grabber. Harrison Nikolao, who was such a disruptive force on the Eagles' defensive line that he was held back in some drills, is now going to help stop those defensive destroyers by moving to the offensive line.
