Fourth-seeded EWU looks to take next big step

MISSOULA – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team continues to make strides under Wendy Schuller, but the next one is going to be difficult. The Eagles (16-11) enter the Big Sky tournament tonight matching their highest seed (fourth) since the tournament went to six teams in 1996. They face Idaho State (12-15) in a game scheduled for 6:35 p.m., hoping to win a first-round game for the fourth straight year.

Moore, Ulmer represent EWU on All-Big Sky conference team

Eastern Washington University's inside-outside combination earned All-Big Sky Conference women's basketball honors, announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference. Junior center Felice Moore and record-breaking senior Stephanie Ulmer represent the Eagles on the 10-player team. Junior forward Julie Page was named honorable mention.

Six other Big West Conference women's basketball teams may be studying the blueprint for Idaho's two victories over 10-time conference champion Santa Barbara, but the Vandals aren't. "We just do what we do," UI coach Mike Divilbiss said. "The ball went in the hole. We played hard and played with some toughness. We've got a long way to go until we can think about Santa Barbara."

With the conference tournament set to get under way Wednesday in Anaheim, veteran Santa Barbara coach Mark French was asked if the Vandals' season sweep of his Gauchos gave other league members hope.

Washington State women's basketball coach Sherri Murrell is a very competitive person, so matching last season's record heading into the Pac-10 Tournament isn't exactly what she had in mind.
