LC’s Dlouhy catches on with Griz

Former Lake City standout Matt Dlouhy, Class of 2002, was a walk-on at Montana and is a key contributor for the Grizzlies, averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds. Last weekend he moved into the starting lineup and in two wins totaled 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. With the Griz playing at Eastern Washington Saturday night, it was a perfect opportunity for the 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore forward to catch up area fans on his progress by answering questions from The Spokesman-Review. S-R: Do you consider the game at Eastern a homecoming?

An abrupt ending for Ferguson

Living a hard serve from the beach and steadily improving as a surfer, Courtney Ferguson loves life in Newport Beach. The Mead grad said that, even though her reason for being in California – to play basketball at Irvine – has been less than a perfect ride. And that was before surgery a week ago to repair a ruptured patella tendon in her left knee.

Eastern women top Weber St.

For more than 30 minutes the Eastern Washington women's basketball team showed it was capable of competing for the Big Sky championship. For the final 8:16 the Eagles were anything but championship caliber.

Wulff gets new 5-year contract

Paul Wulff, who has been the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year twice in his five years as the head man at Eastern Washington University, has agreed to a new five-year contract. "Our intent is to keep Paul here as long as we can and continue to build on the success we have had," EWU athletic director Scott Barnes said. "We hope this new contract will help do that."

Portland St. tops EWU

There were many good reasons to pick the Portland State men's basketball team as the Big Sky Conference team to beat before the season except for one thing – the Vikings were last a year ago. Turns out that may have been the best reason to pick them first instead of second.

After shaky success, Eagles plan for PSU

The latest game was an atrocity: 31-percent shooting from the floor, 11-of-26 shooting from the free-throw line and 17 turnovers. It capped a weekend in which the senior leader, Marc Axton (19 ppg), shot 4 for 20 and scored 18 points over two games.

Team ropers draw main spotlight at Wrangler Pro Rodeo Classic

Maybe they just want to come in out of the cold or maybe they're trying to work out the kinks of new "marriages," but whatever the reason, team ropers take center stage at the Wranger Pro Rodeo Classic at the Arena this weekend. The three-day Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event is void of big-name cowboys, who are almost forced to miss the Spokane event under the new rules that limit the number of rodeos that can count in the race to get to the National Finals Rodeo. Most of them are at the lucrative National Western Rodeo in Denver, which kicks off the 2005 season, and most will head to the Southwest Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas, next week.

Chad won’t leave Eastern hanging

Eastern Washington University had a superstar last year, but that didn't mean a lot when the Big Sky Conference season opened. Kathleen Nygaard put up big numbers all year, but after going 7-6 in non-conference games, the Eagles went 5-9 in the Big Sky.

EWU wins a game Mr. Naismith could appreciate

The Big Sky Conference men's basketball game at Reese Court Saturday night might have ended in record time except for one thing – it took too long to get the ball out of the peach basket after each bucket. At least there were only 51 makes and 91 misses.

Graves posts record-tying win with GU

When Kelly Graves arrived at Gonzaga University five years ago, his women's basketball team won five games. When Raeanna Jewell arrived the next year, Graves joked that she couldn't guard a line on the floor.

EWU wins conference opener

Maybe the Eastern Washington men's basketball team has been playing possum. The Eagles have struggled on Reese Court, rarely showing their trademark tenacity. Wins were even more scarce.

Nicholas adds right energy to Eagles

Khary Nicholas was a late comer to basketball, preferring soccer and cricket until he dunked on an outdoor court in a ghetto of his native Trinidad. His hard-working parents left him with a grandmother, moving to Tacoma to start a better life. The middle and tallest (6-foot-7) of three sons, he joined them before his sophomore year in high school. Foss High School, with current Eagles Marc Axton and Rachi Wortham, won the State 4A title his senior year. He went to Tacoma Community College where he hooked up with former Eagles Brendon Merritt and Josh Bernard and won the NWAACC title his second year when he averaged 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds. He redshirted at EWU his first season and played 28 minutes in eight games last year.

Burke works for 20 points during Gonzaga victory

Ashley Burke didn't lose every time she was on the basketball court with Kim Smith – but only because they have been teammates on occasion. That was until Wednesday night, when Burke scored 20 points and Juliann Laney and Raeanna Jewell did most of the work that held Smith to 10 as Gonzaga upended Utah 66-60 before a crowd of 1,531 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Happy homecoming

PULLMAN – An abundance of talent, relentless pressure and motivation. The 21st-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils had all of those and used them effectively. Led by Emily Westerberg, a sophomore out of Central Valley, and a deep bench that included sophomore Aubree Johnson of Post Falls and freshman Regan Pariseau from CV, the Sun Devils kicked off the Pac-10 women's basketball season Monday night by rolling over Washington State 67-39 at Friel Court.

Eagles have work cut out

Right now, the Gonzaga and Eastern Washington men's basketball teams are going in opposite directions, which doesn't bode well for today's 6 p.m. matchup at the Arena. The 8-1 Bulldogs, fresh off an 85-73 win over then-No. 3 Georgia Tech, jumped nine spots to No. 13 in the Associated Press Top 25 Monday.
