Eagles count UM as one more team

MISSOULA – It's hard to imagine what things might be like this week if Eastern Washington University hadn't lost at Idaho State three weeks ago. The Eagles would still be ranked in the top five instead of No. 12 and would have an identical record to the second-ranked Grizzlies – one loss to a I-A team and unbeaten in the Big Sky Conference.

Running to the rescue

Despite a three-season detour to the Pac-10 after he graduated from South Kitsap, it seems as if first-year Eastern Washington running back Ryan Cole has always been an Eagle. "I like how we play together as a team, how we focus on ourselves," the Oregon State transfer said. "I like how we stress every single day it's not about who we're playing, it's about ourselves and how we have to get better to play Eastern football."

Eagles wasted no time

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – It took 60 minutes for 15th-ranked Eastern Washington to close out a 42-14 win over Northern Arizona on Saturday, but it took just a few seconds for the Eagles to set the tone at the Walkup Skydome. Eastern's defense made a statement on the first play when safety Bryan Jarrett knifed through to knock down running back Ryan Williams for no gain.

Eastern comes out punching

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Walkup Skydome became a woodshed, and 8,974 fans witnessed a whippin' inside Saturday afternoon. The 15th-ranked Eastern Washington Eagles dominated Northern Arizona from start to finish, administering a 42-14 thrashing of the hometown Lumberjacks.

Scoreboard could get big workout today

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – If history is an indication, expect a fire marshal on hand at the Walkup Skydome this afternoon when 15th-ranked Eastern Washington takes on Northern Arizona in a critical Big Sky Conference football game. Whenever the Eagles (2-2 overall, 1-1 in conference) face the Lumberjacks (2-3, 0-2) there is a good chance for fireworks.

NAU coach hurt in fight

The second half of Northern Arizona's Big Sky Conference game at Sacramento State turned sour for the Lumberjacks. NAU was up 10-3 at halftime, but a pair of lost fumbles allowed the winless Hornets to score two quick touchdowns, and they went on to just their eighth conference victory since 2000, 38-24.

Injury news not all bad for Eagles

If bad news can be good, Paul Wulff got it Monday morning. The Eastern Washington football coach learned that starting safety Gregor Smith would be out at least two or three weeks with a knee injury.

Field sloppy; EWU isn’t

The road ahead doesn't get any easier for the Eastern Washington football team, but at least the Eagles are still on the road. Using a balanced offense highlighted by Ryan Cole's five touchdowns and a sturdy defense that kept Joe Rubin under control, Eastern defeated Portland State 42-24 in a critical Big Sky Conference game before 5,902 chilled fans at sloppy Woodward Field on Saturday afternoon.

It’s early, but Eagles have critical game

It's the nature of I-AA football – the Division I level that decides its champion on the field and doesn't allow a mediocre team to play in a bowl game – that a loss in September can push a team perilously close to having its season derailed before it really gets started. That's where Eastern Washington University is after losing at Idaho State last weekend in its Big Sky Conference opener.

EWU’s center of focus

Experience is the best teacher, even if it isn't always kind. But that isn't how Kraig Sigler will remember his first snap as a college football player.

Eastern prepares for Rubin

It doesn't take a great memory to recall Portland State running back Ryan Fuqua slicing and dicing through the Eastern Washington University defense for 393 yards. That happened four short years ago, when Fuqua was a freshman.

Eagles’ comeback falls short

POCATELLO, Idaho – This time there wasn't quite enough Meyer Magic. After his magnificent play rallied fifth-ranked Eastern Washington from another dismal first half, All-American quarterback Erik Meyer threw two interceptions that allowed Idaho State to escape with a 34-30 win in the Big Sky Conference football opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Eagles’ special season takes unexpected turn

POCATELLO, Idaho – Tabbed as preseason Big Sky Conference favorites for the first time, this was going to be a special season for the Eastern Washington football team. Many agreed, as evidenced by the No. 4 preseason ranking, the highest for the Eagles.

Improved ISU presents a challenge

POCATELLO, Idaho – The emphasis of the Eastern Washington University game plan has never wavered under head coach football coach Paul Wulff. "Regardless of the opponent," Wulff says every week, "it's still about us. We need to play well together as a team and program and execute better."

Many scary games remain on Eagles’ list

Eastern Washington University football fans who were a little queasy after watching the Eagles' spotty performance on Saturday can reach for the Maalox now. The Eagles dispatched Division II Western Oregon 48-7, but all precincts, from head coach Paul Wulff to record-breaking quarterback Erik Meyer, reported that the high-powered offense sputtered, despite almost 600 yards.

Eastern cruises, but isn’t sharp

Charles Searcy took the opening kickoff 73 yards but a penalty backed up the play 64 yards. It was that kind of Saturday night for the Eastern Washington football team before an opening-night record crowd of 7,110 at Woodward Field.
Sports

Eastern concentrates on Eastern

The Eastern Washington University football team is playing a familiar opponent tonight – the Eastern Washington Eagles. Technically, the Division II Western Oregon Wolves are lining up opposite the fifth-ranked I-AA team for the 6:05 kickoff at Woodward Stadium, but the Eagles are more concerned with themselves.

Montana State, Idaho State display punch in early non-conference losses

Two weeks into the football season, the Big Sky Conference is without an unbeaten team. That's no surprise, considering every team has played a Division I-A opponent, accounting for eight of the nine losses. The other loss – for 0-2 Sacramento State – came at the hands of a Top 25 I-AA team, Cal Poly.

Eagles lose backup QB for season

Matt Nichols and Alex Smart are battling again, and though the stakes might not be quite as high on a personal level they're much higher for the fifth-ranked Eastern Washington football team. Just two weeks after Nichols beat out Smart to be the third-string quarterback, prompting Smart's move to receiver, the competition has resumed. This time Nichols and Smart are competing to back up All-American Erik Meyer.

Eagles hobble away from San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The football season opened about the way it should have for the fourth-ranked Eastern Washington University Eagles, considering they were playing a Division I-A team. They did some good things and some bad things and they had a chance to win before San Jose State took control in the second half for a 35-24 victory at Spartans Stadium on Saturday.
