EWU’s good first half good enough

For a half of its exhibition game Sunday night Eastern Washington gave every indication that this basketball season was not going to resemble last year's 8-20 campaign in any way. But the second half of the 75-44 rout of UC-San Diego before 1,803 fans at Reese Court certainly gives second-year head coach Mike Burns plenty of reason to keep working on his retooled team.

Crunch time

Yesterday's enemy is today's best friend. After 21st-ranked Eastern Washington knocked the stuffing out of 11th-ranked Montana State 35-14 on Saturday, the Eagles hope the Bobcats bounce back.

Memory worth taking offense to

There were 1,219 yards in the books and 95 points put on the board when Eastern Washington and Montana State squared off last year in a crucial Big Sky Conference football game in Bozeman. Those aren't the kind of numbers a defense wants to remember, even if was on the winning side of the 51-44 game that was decided in overtime.

Gonzaga lands Bowman in stellar class

A potential nationally ranked signing class bolstered by a local standout put the Gonzaga women's basketball team in the spotlight on Wednesday, the first day players could sign a letter of intent. The Bulldogs landed six players on the first day of the early signing, including Heather Bowman of Lewis and Clark and Canadian Janelle Bekkering, who turned down Stanford. Bekkering is the sister of Eastern Washington player Henry Bekkering.

Bobcats sporting some familiar faces

When Jimmy Lake left the Eastern Washington coaching staff the Eagles knew they had lost a good football coach. When he comes back to Woodward Field they don't want to know he is "100 times better."

Eagles under way early with WNIT

Never mind exhibition games, the women's basketball season gets off to an early start this week with a real game. Eastern Washington is headed to California to face the Golden Bears on Wednesday night in the Preseason WNIT.

Sky honors Meyer despite defeat

It's not much of a consolation prize after losing 40-35 at Cal Poly, but Eastern Washington quarterback Erik Meyer was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week. It was the second straight week, fourth time this season and seventh time in his career the senior football All-American was recognized.

Eagles couldn’t offset first-half follies

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In most games, the key is how you finish. That wasn't the case Saturday night when 11th-ranked Eastern Washington University dropped a critical 40-35 non-conference football game at No. 18 Cal Poly.

Mustangs stomp Eagles’ defense

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Eastern Washington's defense, which had been solid if unspectacular all season, was a no-show Saturday night. The 11th-ranked Eagles were shredded for 529 yards by 18th-ranked Cal Poly, which had 113 yards a week earlier, in a disheartening, 40-35 loss before 7,901 delirious homecoming fans at Mustang Stadium.

Eastern tackles Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Paul Wulff doesn't have to hard-sell Eastern Washington University's football game at Cal Poly. Circumstances – meaning a pair of I-AA losses apiece – took care of that.

Big Sky opponents nothing new for Cal Poly

Cal Poly isn't a member of the Big Sky Conference, it just seems that way. Mixed in with the Mustangs' five Great West Football Conference games are five non-counters against Big Sky schools, including Eastern Washington this weekend at Mustang Stadium.

Wounded Eagles waiting for return of their guards

At least they're consistent at Eastern Washington University. Stealing a page from the injury-plagued football team, the Eagles basketball team has seen its numbers dwindle during its preseason practice.

Eagles ready to rack ‘em

After Eastern Washington dispatched Sacramento State 45-17 in a surprisingly easy Big Sky Conference football game last Saturday the coaches started asking questions. How did Portland State-Montana turn out?

Meyer, Kimble magical

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – When a desperate Eastern Washington University football team needed them the most, Erik Meyer and Eric Kimble came through. With the 14th-ranked Eagles on the edge of having their playoff hopes dashed, the "E2" passing combination put on a show.
Sports

Young Eagles step up

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Under normal conditions maybe there wouldn't be much reason for the 14th-ranked football team to be worried facing a two-win team. But conditions aren't normal at Eastern Washington and the Eagles had plenty of reason to worry about Sacramento State.

Eagles could use rebound

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Try as it might, the Eastern Washington University football team couldn't avoid a letdown after beating second-ranked Montana. The result was a 28-23 home loss to Weber State last weekend that undid all the good that resulted from the previous victory.

Eagles remain in hunt

Believe it or not, if you slip on those rose-colored glasses, drink from a half-full glass and send Joe Btfsplk home, all is not lost. There is reason for hope when assessing the immediate future of the Eastern Washington football team.

New inductees bedeck Hall

There was a quandary when the selection committee was considering Jack Spring for the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame: athlete, coach or contributor? Some consider Spring the best high school pitcher in Spokane history from his days as a baseball player at Lewis and Clark before he embarked on an 18-year professional odyssey that included stints with seven major league teams in eight seasons. Then he returned to Spokane to teach and coach at West Valley, guiding the Eagles to Spokane's only state baseball championship in 1978 before becoming the school's athletic director until he retired after 23 years.

Crashing back to earth

Eastern Washington went from royalty to road kill in the Big Sky football championship chase, except for one thing – the Eagles were at home. The sixth-ranked Eagles were in control of their own destiny after upsetting Montana last weekend. That is until Weber State made all the critical big plays down the stretch for an upset of its own 28-23, spoiling a beautiful Saturday afternoon as well as homecoming for 8,696 fans, the second-largest crowd in Woodward Field history.

Eagles focused on Cats

If history can be reversed, can it be repeated? Sounds confusing, but that is where the sixth-ranked Eastern Washington University Eagles find themselves heading into today's Big Sky Conference football game against Weber State.

Vijil catches on

Eastern Washington University football players can't seem to find the words to describe what teammate Raul Vijil does once he catches a short pass over the middle. The Eagles smile and shake their heads at the way the senior wide receiver dances around and then breaks into the open, leaving flailing defenders behind.

Eastern almost special on kicks

Obscured in the euphoria of a solid win over second-ranked Montana at the most intimidating venue in I-AA was the mediocre play of Eastern Washington's special teams. But mediocre is improvement.

More Eagles feeling the pain

Questionable is about the best news Paul Wulff has had on a Monday morning. As the injuries continue to pile up for the Eastern Washington football team, the coach was told that injuries to center Kurt Sigler's shoulder and Garrett Quinn's leg make them questionable for Saturday's homecoming contest with Weber State.

Eagles put the brakes on No. 2 Grizzlies

MISSOULA – Eastern Washington's Meyer Magic offense was mesmerizing once again, quieting the majority of the 23,732 fans at Washington Grizzly Stadium Saturday afternoon, but credit for the 34-20 win in the Big Sky Conference football showdown with No. 2 Montana goes to the Eagles' defense. Despite being overshadowed by Erik Meyer's five touchdown passes, the defense stuffed Montana's powerful running game to spearhead a critical win for the 12th-ranked Eagles (4-2, 3-1) in a place where the Grizzlies had won 10 straight games and had lost only 16 times in 136 previous games.

Hauck a big Meyer fan

MISSOULA – It was another amazing Saturday for Eastern Washington senior quarterback Erik Meyer, but Montana coach Bobby Hauck wasn't amazed after the 12th-ranked Eagles dumped his second-ranked Grizzlies 34-20. "He did what he does. He's a really good player," Hauck said. "He's a terrific kid. … I like him off the field; I don't like playing against him a whole bunch. He played a great game today. That's expected."
