Achievements: Students from Inland Northwest earn academic honors

Students from the Inland Northwest have earned academic honors nationwide for the autumn 2015 semester. Grade-point averages (GPA) are calculated on a 4.0 scale. Spokane resident Marshall Jolly has been named to the president’s honor roll at Bismarck State College in North Dakota after earning a GPA of 3.5 or more.

Innate kindness shows in all of Medical Lake grad’s pursuits

Even when his face was bleeding after being knocked down, or after he was hit hard on his hip during the first play of a game, Jackson Tappero demonstrated sportsmanship. That, plus his innate kindness, earned Tappero recognition and respect from his coaches and peers at Medical Lake High School. During his years at the school, Tappero was a varsity athlete who participated in football, wrestling and track while maintaining a 3.872 grade-point average.

Switch to alternative high school made all the difference

The first instrument Sydney Casch learned to play was the piano. She learned in the seventh grade and it sparked a passion for music that would carry her through difficult times in school. She attended Davenport High School until her junior year. She excelled in band and enjoyed playing sports, but she had fallen behind in her classes. On top of feeling overwhelmed by her studies, Casch also said that she was in a bad crowd.

Air Force Airman Shannon Torrence has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Torrence is the daughter of Christine Summerall, of Spokane, and a 2014 graduate of Shadle Park High School. • Army Spc. Justin Roberts has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. Roberts is the son of Spokane resident David Roberts. He graduated in 2009 from Gonzaga Preparatory School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2013 from Eastern Washington University.
