An upset special

PULLMAN – It was a pair of freshmen that sent Washington State’s seniors off in style Saturday night. In the final game of the regular season the Cougars upended the conference’s second-best team, playing their best game of the season and beating UCLA 73-55. Not even a halftime dunk contest by members of the WSU football team could pull focus from the struggling basketball team on Saturday night, which gave D.J. Shelton and Will DiIorio a Senior Night to remember in their final game at Beasley Coliseum.

DiIorio, Shelton take final bows

PULLMAN – When Will DiIorio and D.J. Shelton wake up Sunday morning they’ll begin the transition to life after college basketball. They will still have practices to attend and a game to prepare for – though that part of their life is also in its waning stages – but they’ll never again step onto Friel Court to play competitively. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” DiIorio said. “I have to find a hobby.”

WSU’s Bucannon hopes his NFL combine performance pays off

PULLMAN – Former Washington State safety Deone Bucannon put up eye-popping numbers at last month’s NFL combine and hopes that he is rewarded for that performance by being selected early in the NFL draft, which begins May 8. “I showed (NFL scouts) how much this means to me and the fact that if I get an opportunity … I’m going to be thankful for it and I’m going to run with it,” Bucannon said.

College baseball: WSU’s Marbut thrilled to play Jason Monda

Jason Monda threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in Washington State’s loss to Cal State Northridge on Thursday. Though the Cougars (2-7) could have used the win, it was a victory to have Monda on campus and eligible to play. The pitcher/outfielder was drafted in the sixth round of last year’s Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Although he decided to return to school, the Phillies accused Monda of violating the NCAA’s “no agent rule”.

WSU standout’s medical ambitions keep him in uniform

For many children, the classroom is an unwelcome quarantine, time that must be spent away from the sandlots and dugouts where they can live out their big league dreams of becoming professional baseball players. Jason Monda spent his time on a baseball diamond and dreamed of textbooks and ink-covered desks. The pitcher/outfielder for Washington State grew up aspiring to a career in hospitals, rather than ballparks, and still aims to be a doctor.
