PULLMAN – It’s never fun in sports to be the last one picked, but that’s what Washington State is hoping for when it comes to Pac-12 bowl selections. Cougars work to stay sharp while awaiting bowl word

Cougs practice with visions of bowl game

For the first time since its 27-17 loss in the Apple Cup, the Washington State football team will return to the Martin Stadium turf for football practice today. As a bowl-eligible team, WSU (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) is permitted to practice until the bowl games make their invitations on Sunday. Whether or not they can continue to practice will depend on if the Cougars secure a berth to their first bowl game since 2003.

Coaches weigh in on Sarkisian’s move

Arizona State coach Todd Graham and Stanford coach David Shaw are preparing for their teams’ rematch in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday. Both, however, took some time during their teleconference on Tuesday to react to the news of former Washington coach Steve Sarkisian’s sudden departure to take the same position at USC. Sarkisian was officially named the new head coach of the Trojans on Monday after reportedly interviewing for the job on Sunday. Ed Orgeron had been serving as interim coach of the Trojans, who fired Lane Kiffin following a 2-2 start to the season.

Cougars troll for best bowl

On Monday, Washington State athletic director Bill Moos began the process of trying to secure a bowl berth for the football team in earnest. With a 6-6 record, the Cougars are eligible for a bowl berth, but are not guaranteed a spot in the postseason. The Pac-12 Conference has contractual ties with seven bowl games but nine teams in the conference are bowl-eligible. As such, it is up to the athletic directors at the three teams tied for seventh in the conference – Arizona, Oregon State and Washington State – to sell other bowls on the merits of granting an at-large invitation to their respective teams.

Pac-12 Conference power rankings

The Pac-12 season has come and gone, with only the championship game left to be played. Some teams will play in bowl games, others will not. But all must submit themselves for judgement via power rankings. There wasn’t a single upset in the Pac-12 last weekend, and so there hasn’t been much drastic movement in the rankings this week. 1 Arizona St. (10-2, 8-1; last week: 1) The Sun Devils survived against their giant-killing rivals, avoiding the pitfall that befell Oregon. With a home game all that stands between ASU and a Rose Bowl, the Sun Devils will play in the conference’s plum bowl game for the first time since the 1996 season.

Cougars play waiting game for potential bowl

SEATTLE – With no more regular-season games left to play, the Washington State football team faces a different kind of challenge this week: the waiting game. The Cougars (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) have placed their cards on the table and can do nothing more but wait and see where the chips fall.
