Medical Lake School Board candidates highlight perspectives on military, special needs students

Incumbent Medical Lake school board member Felicia Jensen said she understands the concerns of military families as a retired U.S. Air Force officer and can gauge how well the school district is preparing students for college through her job at Eastern Washington University. Challenger Laura Parsons, a Medical Lake City Council member, said her perspective comes from helping to manage the city budget and raising children who have special needs.

Cheney school board candidates Swenson, Johns disagree on tax proposals

Incumbent board member Mitch Swenson said the school district needs the two-year capital property levy of 50 cents per $1,000 on November’s ballot to acquire land for future schools and upgrade technology in schools. Challenger Bill Johns said he believes the capital levy is a result of excessive teacher pay increases causing the district to dip into reserve funding.

For little kids, Mutton Bustin’ offers chance at wool riding glory

Mutton Bustin’ may not be bull riding, but that clearly didn’t matterto the roaring crowds and child contestants hoping for a chance at sheep riding glory at the Spokane County Interstate Fair. The shows ran four times daily except for Sunday, and were close to full each time, with between 30 and 36 children registered.

Man accused of firing into crowd and at police after Coeur d’Alene Fourth of July fireworks display arrested Thursday

Seven officers reportedly chased Tyler Reece Rambo, 18, after a report of gunshots on the beach just after fireworks concluded and exchanged gunfire with Rambo near the basketball courts. Rambo is being held in Kootenai County Jail on charges of second-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault. His initial bond was set at $500,000.
