Spokane Valley woman killed today on I-90

A 44-year-old Spokane Valley woman was killed in Interstate 90 in Spokane this morning when she lost control over her vehicle during rush hour and came to a stop sideways in the far left lane. Laura Syhlman-Annal died at the scene of the collision on the Latah Creek Bridge about 6:30 a.m.

STA adds buses as daily ridership keeps increasing

An economic downturn and lower gasoline prices haven’t kept a growing number of riders from boarding Spokane Transit Authority buses in recent months. The agency saw a 17.7 percent increase in ridership from 2007 to 2008. More than 11 million passengers boarded STA buses in 2008, including 1 million in October, the agency’s first million-passenger month.

Swan route

The spring migration of tundra swans through the Inland Northwest is imminent, and tourism officials in Pend Oreille County planning a tour to share the spectacle of the swans’ annual flight to northern breeding grounds. On Saturday, the Pend Oreille River Tourism Alliance and the Natural Resources Department of the Kalispel Tribe are putting on a special swan viewing and education event.

Lower stream flow forecast, despite snow

Mountains in the Inland Northwest have enough snow to keep most of the region’s rivers flowing at 80 percent to 90 percent of normal, according to a water supply outlook issued this week. Some rivers may see flows well below normal, including those in north-central Washington and the Okanogan Valley, said Royce Fontenot, hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Spokane.

The Rogers High School drum corps boomed its way through the school’s halls Tuesday morning to stir up some Pirate pride. They had momentum on their side: Rogers’ underdog boys basketball team was preparing to leave for the state 3A championship tournament in Tacoma, the first time a Rogers basketball team has made it to the state tourney since 1975.
