Snow showers, cold coming this weekend

Lingering winter weather is expected to continue across the region through the middle of next week as a new northern cold front drops southward across the Inland Northwest on Saturday, bringing with it a reinforcing shot of cold air and a likelihood of snow showers.

Small schools chase big prize

Paul Carlson and Ed Locke of Toutle, Wash., were on good behavior Wednesday at the State 2B Basketball Championships in Spokane. During the regular season, Carlson and Locke were notorious for putting on their game faces and riding the referees as they cheered their daughters, they said. But school officials asked them to tone it down, to be good ambassadors. So they left the body paint at home and quietly told themselves Wednesday the refs were being fair.

Plant sale to benefit Manito Park projects

The Friends of Manito organization will have tropical plants for sale from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Manito Park greenhouses just east of the Gaiser Conservatory. Plants with colored or variegated leaves will be available. Sale organizers said the plants could be used with indoor container gardens. Many of the plants can also be moved outdoors during the summer if they get protection from bright sun.

Lane closed on westbound I-90 near state line

North Idaho traffic in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 at the Washington state line was slowed this morning as workers from the Idaho Department of Transportation worked to repair a large pothole that opened up on an expansion joint of the freeway bridge over the Spokane River.
