Foundation NW names scholarship winners

Foundation Northwest announces scholarship winners

Foundation Northwest recently announced the recipients of 72 scholarships to local students. The foundation awards scholarships annually to students in 20 counties in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Each student's school is listed, along with the name and amount of the scholarship. Dishman Baptist congregation will celebrate in new space

For the past year and a half the congregation of Dishman Baptist Church traded in their pews for the hardwood floors of the gym at North Pines Middle School. Now, the eagerly anticipated building addition is complete and members will worship for the first time in their new space at 11 a.m. Sunday. The project doubled the size of the sanctuary, which now seats 400, and added 12 classrooms, said the Rev. Gary Bass. The original building also underwent significant changes, including bringing the kitchen from the basement to the ground floor, "much to the delight of our kitchen people," Bass said. "We went pretty whole-hog on the remodel."

Area Scouts attain Eagle rank

Three area residents were recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. Brian Johnson, a member of Troop 80, is a senior at Mt. Spokane High School. For his project he created a promotional video for the Westminster House, a nonprofit in the West Central neighborhood. Johnson is the son of Mark and Gaylene Johnson of Mead.

Buckaloo retirement party planned

After nearly 40 years in the pulpit, the Rev. Neal Buckaloo is retiring from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the same church he served in when he first arrived in the Spokane area in 1970. The congregation is throwing him a retirement party at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, 810 S. Sullivan Road. The evening will include a potluck dinner.

Achievements: WSU conductor to study in Russia

Nicholas Wallin, an associate professor of music at Washington State University, was recently accepted to the International Academy of Advanced Conducting in St. Petersburg, Russia. Those interested in attending were required to submit an application, résumé and video to be considered. Wallin conducts the WSU Symphony Orchestra and teaching conducting. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Minnesota. “ Global Credit Union recently announced the recipients of four $1,000 scholarships. Christopher Ranny of Mt. Spokane High School and Sarah Miller of Shadle Park High School were awarded Merle E. Brumgard Memorial Scholarships. Michelle Sybouts of Ferris High School and Brooke Petkevicius, formerly of Mt. Spokane High School, were awarded Founders and Pioneers Scholarships.

Achievements: Jonathan Lai attains Eagle rank

Jonathan Lai recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. Lai, a member of Troop 208, is a junior at Mt. Spokane High School. For his project Lai built a sign, retaining wall and flower garden at the Spokane Chinese Baptist Church. Lai is the son of Grace and Y.S. Lai of Spokane. “Three area Girl Scouts have been selected to attend an all-expenses-paid trip to the Get Down to Business Leadership Institute in New York City. Drina Kane, Faith Proctor and Chantel Williams, all of Spokane, are among 30 girls from across the country who will attend the conference focusing on financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Churches band together for vacation Bible school

Three churches in the Otis Orchards area are joining forces to bring a vacation Bible school session to the community. The theme of the session, set for July 31 through Aug. 3, is "Arctic Edge." Otis Orchards Community Church, 23304 E. Wellesley Ave., will host the session, which is also sponsored by Starr Road Baptist Church and Word of Life. Children in grades K-6 will gather from 9 a.m. to noon daily. There is no charge.

The Junior League of Spokane recently announced the recipients of its annual Sustainer of the Year and Active of the Year awards. Trish McFarland was named Sustainer of the Year. She currently is working with the YWCA domestic violence program.

Achievements: Trio win Young Entrepreneur honors

“ Three area students were recently given $1,000 Young Entrepreneur Awards from the National Federation of Independent Business Young Entrepreneur Foundation. The national scholarship program awarded more than 400 scholarships this year based on academics and two essays. The recipients are Stephen Hardy of Davenport, Wash., Pamela Passmore of Endicott, Wash., and Lisa Stoll of West Valley High School.

Foothills festival today

The Foothills community will be rocking today with the kick-off of the Foothills Family Fun Festival at Foothills Community Church. The list of planned activities seems to go on forever and includes carnival games, a putting green, dunk tank, car show, craft fair, face painting, pony rides, bingo and a bounce house. The festival also will include live music, food, an obstacle course and a tug-of-war competition. There's sure to be something for every age and the community is invited. The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the church at 11102 N. Forker Road.

Sign up for Bible school sessions

The vacation Bible School sessions continue at Valley churches. The events combine learning about the Bible with fun, which can be a good mix for any child already bored by summer. Spaces can sometimes fill up fast, so it's always a good idea to register early. •The theme of the VBS session set for July 10-14 at Zion Lutheran Church is "Gospel Express: All Aboard God's Celebration Train." Activities will include Bible stories, music, art, games, drama and snacks. Classes for children age 4 through the sixth grade will be from 9 to 11:45 a.m. daily.

LC grad wins WASL scholarship

“ Kirk Sexton was recently awarded a WASL scholarship from the DigiPen Institute in Redmond, Wash. The award was given based on Sexton's score of 4 on the math and science portion of the WASL. The scholarship will pay for 50 percent of the annual tuition at the school. Sexton, a 2006 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Bob and Carol Sexton of Spokane. “Barbara Eldredge of Spokane was recently named to the dean's list at Ohio Wesleyan University. Eldredge, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of Bruce and Janet Eldredge.

Pair named Washington Scholars

Two seniors in the Spokane Public Schools school district were recently selected as Washington Scholars. The program awards two high school seniors in each of the state's 49 legislative districts scholarships with up to four years of tuition and fees at any college or university in Washington. Students are nominated for the scholarship by their high school principals. The winners are: Michelle Sybouts of Ferris High School and Tim Hill of North Central High School. Dylan Versteeg of Ferris High School was selected as an alternate.
