Education notebook: East Valley Middle School teacher honored

An East Valley Middle School ELA teacher was honored in front of representatives from 22 countries during the International Conference on Education, Diversity and Respect in Seattle in August. Julie Scott received an award for Outstanding Commitment and Devotion to the Welfare of Children. She spoke about her work with the Janusz Korczak Association, an organization that promotes the legacy of Korczak, whose work with Polish and Jewish orphans in Warsaw, Poland, from 1912 to 1942 focused on universal humanism and progressive teaching methods. He advocated for children’s rights.

More than 2,300 students have been named to the winter quarter honor roll at Spokane Fall Community College, requiring a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students are listed by hometown.

Education notebook: Mead junior earns congressional award

A Mead High School junior has been named among 10 students nationwide to receive the Congressional Award Gold Medal. Lauren Champlin, a junior, has been invited to receive the award during a ceremony June 21 in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes initiative, service and accomplishments of young people.

Education notebook: Freeman FBLA receives top chapter award; two members advance to nationals

The Freeman High School Future Business Leaders of America chapter was honored as one of the top chapters in the state during the recent State Leadership Conference held in Bellevue. The 19 students who attended from Freeman received the Champion Chapter – Gold Chapter Award of Merit. The students had to finish in the top six in the regional competition held in February in order to advance to the state competition. Two of the students, seniors Marley Pratt and Tyler Waite, qualified to attend the National FBLA Leadership Conference in Baltimore in June. Seniors Erick Flack, Odie Landoe, Nathan Longhurst and Shilo Stuart have been named alternates.
