With more than half of the ballots left to count, early results from Tuesday’s special election show voter support for schools and fire protection in Spokane County. A $79 million bond measure in the Cheney School District that would pay for two new middle schools and a 400-student elementary school on the West Plains was passing 3,994 votes to 2,171.

Hundreds of cheerleaders tumbled into the Spokane Convention Center to earn their spot among the region’s best. The competition was hosted by the PacWest Cheer Spirit Group.

Driver, passengers in chase ID’d

Three passengers and the teenage driver of a car involved in a chase that ended in a foot pursuit and subsequent arrests Friday night by the Idaho State Police have been identified. Police attempted to stop a vehicle, driven by Timothy R. Allen, 17, of Worley, about 4:35 p.m., after spotting the car driving recklessly northbound on Highway 95 near Elder Road.

Suit against former Joel tenant dropped

The developer of a downtown loft project who filed suit in October for damages related to the devastating Joel Building fire has withdrawn the lawsuit. The Lofts at Joel LLC, co-owned by developer and architect Ron Wells, of Wells & Co., filed an order Jan. 8 for a dismissal of the case against Dorian Studios, the photography business that operated at the site of the fire. The suit, which sought “economic losses” to be determined at trial, alleged that Dorian employees engaged in activities that caused the July 24, 2008, fire at 165 S. Post St., although court documents did not specify those activities.
