Firefighting Crews Contain Shoshone County Blazes

From Staff

Dozens of firefighters contained two fires in Shoshone County during the weekend.

On Monday, 33 firefighters were still monitoring the 10-acre Larch Creek Fire, located in the Baldy Creek drainage 10 miles southwest of Cataldo. Another 21 people worked to put out the Hellofahike Fire in Moon Gulch about four miles northeast of Kellogg.

“We call it that because it’s a couple of hours’ hike uphill,” said Edward Warner, resource manager for the Idaho Department of Lands. Water was flown by helicopter to the 3/4-acre Moon Gulch fire in orange, 72-gallon bags.

Both fires started from lightning strikes during last Wednesday’s wind storm. Thirteen other spot fires, also a result of lightning strikes, were being patrolled and mopped up Monday, Warner said.
