Hungry? Maybe You Need Something To Drink

Merri Lou Dobler Correspondent

On a hot summer day, you wander into the kitchen, searching for something to eat. You open cupboards and look in the refrigerator. Nothing grabs your attention. What do you really want?

You might be surprised to know that what you’re really looking for is something to drink. Many times we’re not cued in to what our body is telling us, and we automatically look to food.

Try a glass of cold water, or two glasses, and see what you think. Surprised at how satisfying that was?

It’s not just during strenuous exercise that our need for water escalates. On hot August days your body needs water just to function right. Many people don’t realize that they are in a constant state of semidehydration, drinking only mouthfuls here and there.

Try this experiment. Make no extra effort to drink additional beverages today. Rub your hands together periodically during the day. Notice if they feel dry or smooth.

Tomorrow, fill a pitcher full of water and drink the water during the day. Keep the pitcher in the refrigerator to keep it cool. Check the palms of your hand during the day. Notice anything different? Your hands will be softer and more supple, just like those hand cream commercials. You’ve given your body the moisture it needs.

Make drinking water a habit; use the pitcher-in-the-refrigerator trick if you need to. Get in the habit of giving your body one of its most essential nutrients.

Lettuce is loaded with water - it’s 90 percent water - and makes this salad a cool evening meal. Take advantage of fresh peaches, also full of water, and treat your family to a new summer salad.
