Brazil, led by Oscar Schmidt’s 27 points, captured the last spot in the men’s basketball field at the Atlanta Olympics, defeating Canada 97-77 in the third-place game at the Americas Basketball qualifying tournament in Neuquen, Argentina.

Puerto Rico beat Argentina 87-86 to take the gold medal, scoring the winning points with less than five seconds left. Both gained Olympic berths with semifinal wins on Saturday.

In Fukuoka, Japan, Josh Davis won gold medals in the men’s 400-meter freestyle and the 4 x 100-meter relay for the United States in World University Games aquatic competition as the Americans remained locked in a close battle with Japan for overall supremacy.

The Japanese had 14 golds and 33 medals in all. The Americans had 12 golds in a collection of 32 medals.
