Shopping Can Be Easy If We Show Each Other Some Common Courtesy

Merri Lou Dobler Correspondent

It’s time to remember courtesy on the roads; school starts on Tuesday. Slow down to 20 mph in school zones, and keep your eye out for children.

You might also think about being courteous in the grocery store. Here’s my list of supermarket pet peeves, those little things that other shoppers do that are annoying:

People who really squeeze the fruit, pull back the husks on fresh corn, and ignore heads of lettuce and other vegetables that have fallen on the floor.

Customers who decide they don’t want an item and leave it wherever they happen to be, like a bakery item sitting in the canned goods.

Adult “samplers” who eat more than their fair share in the bakery, leaving nothing for others.

Express lane customers with an obviously great number of items - and their checkbook instead of cash.

Deli customers who can’t make up their minds what salads to order.

People who go back for a forgotten item while their groceries are being checked - leaving a long line behind them.

Customers who block the row with their cart and are oblivious to everyone.

People with coupons who can’t remember at the checkout how many of the items they’ve gotten.

That’s my list. You’ll have to go shopping to get the ingredients for these Picnic Burritos, but a pleasant trip can be had for everyone with a little common courtesy.

Picnic Burritos

Adapted from “Mexican Fast & Flavorful” (General Mills, Inc.)

1/2 cup low-fat or nonfat mayonnaise or salad dressing

2 teaspoons taco seasoning mix (from 1-1/4-ounce envelope)

10 nonfat flour tortillas (8 inches in diameter)

1 cup shredded nonfat Cheddar cheese (4 ounces)

1/2 pound thinly sliced deli turkey

2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced

Leaf lettuce

Mix mayonnaise and seasoning mix; spread on each tortilla. Sprinkle with cheese. Layer with turkey, tomatoes and lettuce, leaving about 2 inches at one side covered with mayonnaise mixture only. Beginning at side layered with turkey, roll up each tortilla. Secure with toothpick if necessary.

Serve immediately or securely wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate.
