You Too Can Get A Milk-Fat Lip
Talk about milking it for all it’s worth.
Every time we turn around, it seems, we see some female celebrity’s milk-mustached mug as part of that ad campaign to convince fat-phobic women to drink more moo.
Well, you could be next. The National Fluid Milk Processor Promotion Board has announced a “Milk Mustache Photo Contest,” open to dairy drinkers of all ages and genders.
The winning photo will be printed in a major national magazine, with other prizes provided by a leading film company. (Sorry, we’re just in a non-commercial mood today).
Entry deadline is Sept. 30. For more information, call 1-800-WHYMILK or write to: Milk Mustache Photo Contest, P.O. Box 8552, Prospect Heights, IL 60070.
Dog days of summer
Red-hot news from a Gallup poll for National Hot Dog Month:
While Americans eat an annual average of 66 hot dogs per person, men consume about three times as many dogs as do women, who are more likely to actually look at what they’re putting in their mouths.
Mustard is the most popular topping (used by 60 percent of the people polled), followed by ketchup (38 percent), relish (22 percent), onions (21 percent) and unwitting insects (figure unavailable).
Hot dog consumption is highest in the East and Midwest, where such alternatives as Rocky Mountain oysters are largely unavailable.
Close to 20 percent of men and 10 percent of women eat hot dogs most frequently at sporting events, particularly in the West, where they love their pennant wieners.
Spud secrets
Spokane’s own Elinor Nuxoll was among the winners in Reunion magazine’s summer picnic potato recipe contest.
Nuxoll suggested several uses for potatoes that can be baked ahead of time and prepared on the spot, an approach she follows regularly at home.
“If I’m baking anything, I put potatoes in the oven, too, and keep them in the refrigerator,” she says.

And in case you were wondering, the Baskin-Robbins ice cream flavor of the month for July is a chocolatey concoction called Little Bear Crunch, named after the main character in the new movie “The Indian In The Cupboard.” But wouldn’t he keep better in the freezer? , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Drawing of mustard & ketchup bottles
