Remains Of Wwii Airmen Returned To U.S.

Compiled From Wire Services

The remains of two U.S. airmen whose bomber went down in the Mediterranean during World War II were headed back to the United States on Saturday.

The skeletons of the two - who have not been identified - were handed over to U.S. Air Force attache David S. Leonard at a military ceremony late Friday, the Anatolia news agency said.

Parts of the B-24 Liberator bomber were brought to the surface last month. The two skeletons were found among the wreckage.

The plane, which took off from the northern coast of Libya, was hit by anti-aircraft fire in August 1943 after taking part in a mission to bomb five Romanian oil refineries.

Three airmen aboard the B-24 were killed, while seven other crew members were rescued by villagers.
