Sfcu Starts Fast, Routs North Stars In Legion Baseball

Spokane Federal Credit Union used a nine-run first inning to pound North Stars 16-3 in American Legion baseball at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field on Saturday.

Pat Stiffler had three hits and three RBIs for SFCU. Tucker Urdahl chipped in three hits and two RBIs and Brian Maley had two hits and drove in three runs.

Zack Nelson had a three-run home run for North Stars.

Also at Shadle, Global Federal Credit Union edged North Stars 2-1 and Washington Trust Bank downed Job Quest 16-8.

Cary Snow had an RBI double and Andy Sage a run-scoring single in GFCU’s victory.

Steve Gleason smacked two home runs and hit a double for WTB. He finished with four RBIs. WTB blew the game open with a nine-run seventh inning.

At Colville, M&L Construction swept a doubleheader with KC Stars, winning 10-1 and 7-3.

In the first game, Ray Hattenburg drove in three runs to back Rob Elmer’s five-hitter. Elmer struck out three. Cory Oden had a solo homer for M&L.

In the second game, Sam Chimienti ripped an RBI triple and Matt Armitage a run-scoring double for M&L.

Tennis

Eric Jacobson of Seattle and Steve Koon of Pullman advanced to today’s men’s singles final at the Inland Empire Championships at the Spokane Racquet Club.

Jacobson beat Spokane’s Nate Williams 7-6, 7-6 and Koon tripped Seattle’s Tumo Shirmasa 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in semifinal matches.

In the women’s semifinals, Karen Bushoff of South Africa downed Julie Scott of Spokane 7-5, 6-2 and Erica Perkins of Seattle stopped Spokane’s Mary Ryerse 6-1, 7-5.

The men’s and women’s finals will begin today at 11 a.m., followed by the doubles’ finals at 1 p.m.

Special Olympics

Spokane’s John Wood won three gold medals in power lifting and Stacey Johnston of Spokane won a silver in golf at the Special Olympics World Games in New Haven, Conn.

Wood won the bench press (237 pounds), the dead lift (429 pounds) and the double combined (666 pounds).

Johnston shot a final-round 99 for a three-day total of 307.
