Concern Outlasts Field

Compiled From Wire Services

Concern, showing no signs of jet lag from a cross-country flight, drew away from a contingent of California horses in the stretch to win the $273,400 Californian by 2 1/4 lengths at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

Concern, noted for laying far off the pace, moved to the leaders approaching the half-mile pole under Mike Smith. He gained the lead heading into the far turn and opened up a two-length advantage turning for home in the 1 1/8-mile race.

Concern, finished in 1:47 3/5, and paid $7 to win. Tossofthecoin ran second, one-half length ahead of Tinners Way. Best Pal, the 3-2 favorite, was fourth.
