Dp/R Gains Share Of First In Fl Soccer

Four different players scored Thursday as visiting Deer Park/Riverside stopped East Valley 4-0 to tie the Knights for first place in Frontier League girls soccer.

Katie Bowers, Traci Koesel, Danae Anderson and Bernice Stime scored for DP/R (9-2-0, 18 points), which lost to EV (8-1-2, 18) in the initial meeting. The league season ends Tuesday; a seeding playoff will be held Thursday if needed.

Elsewhere, Cheryl Nelson scored three times and assisted on one of Dawn Salfer’s two goals as visiting and thirdplace West Valley (7-1-3, 17) beat Cheney 5-0. Nelson has five goals in two matches. Fourth-place Cheney is 6-4-1, 14.

Kristine Hansen, Kelly Kerns and Hope Anderson scored in Colville’s 3-1 win over visiting Medical Lake (3-9-0, 6). The Indians (2-8-1, 5) lost to Medical Lake 1-0 earlier this year.

Volleyball

North Central and Lewis and Clark, both 9-5, won to remain tied for third in the Greater Spokane League.

Tamara Van Engelen had 17 kills and three blocks as NC stopped visiting Rogers 15-5, 15-8, 15-12. Teana Scott led the Pirates (2-12) with eight kills.

Erin Naipo’s 16 kills and 17 digs, and Ingrid Lindeblad’s 24 assists guided LC to a 15-11, 5-15, 15-9, 15-7 win at Shadle Park (4-10). Molly Hathaway had 19 assists and 13 digs for the Highlanders.

Gonzaga Prep (14-0) added to its title season with a 17-15, 15-10, 15-9 win over visiting University (8-7). Prep’s Jennifer Williams and Brandy Barratt had 12 kills and five blocks apiece. Sally Jamison led U-Hi with eight kills and 10 digs.

Colville will miss the playoffs for the first time in 10 years after a 15-5, 15-8, 15-13 Frontier home loss to WV (6-4).

Jennifer Quimby had 13 assists and seven digs for the Indians (3-8), who are too far back to catch fourth-place Pullman (5-4). Arin Craig had 14 kills for playoff-bound WV.

Cheney (3-7) moved a whisker closer to playoff elimination after a 15-8, 15-4, 15-2 loss at league champ Clarkston (11-0). Erin Kapiko had six kills for Cheney, which must win its final two to have a shot at fourth. Clarkston’s Christy Jacobs served 11 points and had 10 digs.

Cross country

EV’s top-ranked girls and WV’s second-ranked boys wrapped up undefeated Frontier seasons.

EV’s girls (6-0) defended their league title with six runners in the top eight at home in beating Clarkston (1-5) and Pullman (2-4). Runner-up Ann Marie Adams (20 minutes, 5 seconds for 3 miles) led EV. Winner Jennifer Rea (19:46) helped Clarkston beat Pullman.

The WV boys (6-0) have won or shared the last four titles. Levi Lounder (16:35) led a top-five sweep for WV against Cheney (2-4) at Plantes Ferry Park.

Also at Plantes Ferry, defending State AA champion Jeannette Zimmer (18:54) of Cheney (1-5) broke free from 1993 state champion Jessica Riehle of WV with 200 yards remaining to break the course record of 19:03 that Riehle set last week. WV (5-1) won the meet by gobbling up places 3-7.

EV’s boys (4-2) swept visiting Pullman and Clarkston, led by champion Chris Henderson (16:45). Brandon Wisniew (17:14) finished second to lead the Greyhounds (3-3) over Clarkston (1-5).

Riverside won a pair of meets at Colville, giving the boys (5-1) second place and the girls (4-2) third place. Jon Ashcraft (14:51 for 2.7 miles) led four Rams boys in the top five for an 18-43 win over Colville (0-6). Nora Zaprzalka (18:07) topped five Rams girls in the top seven during a 22-37 win over the Indians (2-4).

Wilbur-Creston swept Wednesday’s Bi-County championships at Ritzville.

Bryan Marchand won the boys race in a meet-record 17 minutes for 3 miles. Matthew Olsen (17:17) was second and three other Wildcats finished in the top 10. W-C scored 25 while runner-up Reardan, behind third-place John Brown (17:30), scored 44.

Jess Bean ran a record 21:13 for the W-C girls, who placed four in the top six and scored 26 to the 46 of runner-up Ritzville. Amber Wagner (21:29) of Davenport finished second.

St. George’s also pulled off a sweep, commanding the Panorama League championships at Springdale.

Last year’s State B champion Christian Laugen ran the 3 miles in 16:22 and helped the Dragons to 30 points, eight less than Springdale. Christian Tracy (17:14) of Northwest Christian finished second.

The St. George’s girls nipped Wellpinit 37-39 as Melissa Harvill (21:11) led the field. Tammy Brown of Springdale (21:51) was second.
