Smith’s Reports Brisk Weekend Business

Compiled From Wire Services

Smith’s Home Furnishings apparently met its Labor Day weekend sales goal of $3 million, which would keep the financially troubled company in business, its chairman says.

“It appears to hit that number on the head, which is something we are very, very excited about,” Glen Grodem said.

The company, which sought protection from its creditors in bankruptcy court two weeks ago, reopened its Oregon and Boise, Idaho, stores Friday after a 13-hour hearing. Stores in Washington remained shut, however, and 400 workers were laid off.

Smith’s survival depended on sales over the traditionally busy holiday weekend. A judge will review the weekend revenues and determine whether Smith’s should stay open.
