Mead Boys, Ike Girls Outkick Field

The Mead boys and Eisenhower girls, both top-ranked defending State AAA champions, won the elite races Saturday at Shadle Park’s Highlander Invitational.

Mead’s boys won the senior race with their depth, as sixth-place Mark Mohrlang was the lone Panthers runner in the top 10. Mead scored 64 points while runner-up University tallied 104.

Matt Kerr of Kennewick won the 2.5-mile race in 12 minutes, 45 seconds. Defending State B champion Christian Laugen of St. George’s (13:00) was second.

Ike scored 53 to ace runner-up and second-ranked University (72) in the senior girls race. The individual winner was 1993 State AA champion Jessica Riehle of West Valley, in 15:14. Ike’s Stephanie Heaton, second at state last year, was 9 seconds back.

The Ferris girls outkicked 25 other teams and the Ferris boys finished 1-2-3 at the Sandy (Ore.) Invitational.

The Saxons girls, behind Jennifer Smith’s runner-up effort and Kristen Parrish’s third-place finish, scored 54 points to defeat defending Oregon A-4 champion Bend.

Allison Cowart of Bend ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:48 to edge Smith by 6 seconds. Smith led for two-thirds of the race.

Bend won the boys team title, with 75 points to the 84 of runner-up Ferris, but the Saxons swept the top spots with David Schruth (16:33), Isaac Hawkins (16:39) and Paul Harkins (16:42). Hawkins led the entire race until he missed a turn with 200 meters to go.

Football

Hanford (2-0) held Lakeside to 67 yards rushing during a 32-12 non-league win at Nine Mile.

The Falcons outscored the Eagles 16-2 in the second half after a close first half. Jason Downey had a 35-yard touchdown run and Ryan Chicoine kicked a 35-yard field goal for the Eagles (0-2).

At Kettle Falls, Josh Fealy ran for two TDs and the Bulldogs (1-1) amassed 290 yards of offense in a 27-9 win over the Mead junior varsity. KF’s Mike Hall scored on a reception and interception return.

Volleyball

Host Central Valley roared back for a 9-15, 4-15, 15-4, 15-8, 15-12 Greater Spokane League win over Shadle Park - the Bears’ first league win over the Highlanders (1-5) in a decade.

Jessica Sackmann had 23 assists, 13 digs and seven kills for CV (1-2). For Shadle, Shae Sullivan had 13 digs and Molly Hathaway 18 assists.

At North Central, Jessica Sanborn had 27 kills and Mandi Larson 12 digs as Mead (3-2) beat the host Indians 16-14, 16-14, 12-15, 11-15, 15-9.

Jen Clark had seven blocks for Mead. Aimee Wilson led NC (2-2) with 24 kills and seven blocks.

At Chattaroy, Molly Fisher’s 11 kills led Pullman (2-1) to a 15-6, 15-3, 15-6 win in host Riverside’s Frontier League inaugural match.

Molly Singer added nine digs for the Greyhounds. The Rams, just up from the Northeast A, had three kills from Erin Nelson.

At Clarkston, Amy Metcalf had 10 blocks and nine aces as the host Bantams (2-0) defeated Colville 15-4, 15-3, 15-10 to tie idle East Valley for first place.Crystal Poskey added 23 assists for Clarkston. Nika Black man had four kills, two aces and two blocks for the Indians (0-3).

Boys golf

Kyle Kelly of Spokane shot a 1-over-par 73 for second place after the opening round of the Lake Tahoe Classic at Genoa, Nev.

Kelly trails leader Andy Miller of Napa, Calif., by one stroke.
