Marbury To Leave Georgia Tech For Nba After Freshman Season

Compiled From Wire Services

Stephon Marbury made it official Wednesday night, announcing he will enter the 1996 NBA draft and leave Georgia Tech after one season.

Marbury, who led Brooklyn’s Lincoln High School to the Public School Athletic League and State Federation championships a little more than a year ago, made the announcement at Junior’s Restaurant on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, surrounded by his family and many friends.

“It’s official,” Marbury said into the crowd of television cameras and reporters. “I don’t know where to start, so I’m just going to speak from my heart because it’s easier than writing something on paper. I’m going to the NBA.”

Marbury made the announcement as his mother and father flanked him on his left along with his four brothers and Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins.

“I fully support Stephon’s decision,” Cremins said.

In one season, Marbury led Georgia Tech to its first outright Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title and the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

Marbury has signed with agent Eric Fleischer and said it didn’t matter what team drafted him.
