Substitutes Cut Fat From Recipes
For those watching their fat intake, here are some substitutions you can make for a more healthful diet. The number in parentheses at the end of each line shows the fat grams you save:
Bacon (2 strips): 1 ounce Canadian bacon (8).
Baking Chocolate (1 ounce): 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (4).
Egg (1 whole): 2 egg whites (5).
Heavy cream/half-and-half (1 cup): 1 cup evaporated skim milk (89 cream, 26 half-and-half).
Margarine (1/4 cup to use in pasta, stuffing or rice mix): 1 tablespoon margarine and 3 tablespoons broth (36).
Oil (2 tablespoons for sauteing): 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon broth or water (24).
Sour cream (1 cup): 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt (40).
