Associated Press

Donovan Bailey of Canada, the Olympic champion and world record-holder, surged from behind to beat Dennis Mitchell in the 100-meter dash at the IAAF Grand Prix meet Friday.

Mitchell, who had beaten Bailey at Zurich on Wednesday, had a quick start and led at 50 meters.

But Bailey began catching up and pulled away in the final 10 meters to win in 10.03 seconds. Bailey set the world record of 9.84 in winning the Olympic gold.

Mitchell, who was fourth at Atlanta, finished second in 10.07, while Frankie Fredericks of Namibia, the Olympic silver medalist, was third in 10.14. Bruny Surin of Canada was fourth in 10.16, edging Ato Boldon of Trinidad, the bronze medalist at Atlanta, who placed fifth in 10.19.

In the women’s 100 meters, Merlene Ottey of Jamaica got revenge over her American rivals. Ottey, who lost a photo finish to Gail Devers at Atlanta, won one Friday in 10.98.

Gwen Torrence, the Olympic bronze medalist, led most of the way, but wound up second in 10.99. Devers was third in 11.12.

Samuel Matete of Zambia avenged his Olympic loss to Derrick Adkins by winning the 400-meter hurdles. Matete, silver medalist at Atlanta, clocked 48.02 to nip Adkins, the runner-up, in 48.12. Calvin Davis of the United States, the Olympic bronze medalist, was third again in 48.21.

In the women’s 400-meter hurdles, Deon Hemmings of Jamaica confirmed her Olympic victory by posting the fastest time this year of 53.67. The finish reflected the Olympic outcome, with Kim Batten second in 54.17 and Tonja Buford-Bailey third in 54.24.
