Spicing up his sex life

Virginia Tech tailback Marcus Parker was suspended last week for shoplifting, a crime he kept secret from the team for a month because of the program’s off-the-field problems.

Parker tried to steal a 12-pack of condoms and a small jar of garlic salt from a market.

“He was afraid to come tell us about it,” running backs coach Billy Hite said. “I was disappointed by that.”

After seven Virginia Tech players were charged with crimes in the past year, coach Frank Beamer told his players that anyone else who violated the law will be severely punished.

The suspension came on the eve of media day. Parker did not attend.

Parcells, the he-man

New England Patriots coach Bill Parcells, who did not want to make Ohio State receiver Terry Glenn his team’s first draft pick, has his own way of letting the team’s owners know he is not happy with Glenn’s performance.

Asked how Glenn was doing, Parcells said, “She’s making progress.”

What a card

It’s amazing what being a vice presidential candidate can do for an old pro football player’s card value. Since former quarterback Jack Kemp was tabbed by Bob Dole as his Republican running mate, the asking price for a Fleer’s rookie card from his 1960 Los Angeles Charger season has jumped from $200-$300 to $400-$600, according to Doug Kale, editor of Sports Card Trader.

If he makes the White House, it could go to $1,000 or more.

Dim lights, tiny town

Displaced by the Olympics, and the Paralympics, the Georgia Tech football team has been deported to Dahlonega, Ga., this summer.

Dahlonega, 65 miles from Atlanta, is a town of 3,452 where the Jackets have been going to class, working out and enduring two-a-day practices on North Georgia’s military drill field.

And they don’t like it.

“The city, the sights, the glamour, the glitz - that’s what got me (to attend Tech),” said tailback C.J. Williams. “That’s what got most of us.”

Added offensive guard Ken Celaj of New York: “I feel like I’m in some Alfred Hitchcock movie. The crickets put me to sleep every night. It’s so quiet you can hear yourself think. People leave their cars unlocked, windows down, keys in the ignition.”

Tech coach George O’Leary has imposed an 11 p.m. curfew because “there are no lights on then. The Dairy Queen closes at 9.”

Quit your complaining. Pullman doesn’t even have a DQ.
