We hadn’t even reported it before word broke that the celebrity wedding was off.

The British magazine Here ran a story alleging that Brad Pitt, 32, and Gwyneth Paltrow, 23, were planning a March marriage. Pitt supposedly had proposed Thanksgiving weekend in Argentina, the site of his current film project, “Seven Years in Tibet.”

“It was very emotional and Brad had gone to a lot of trouble,” an unidentified film executive told the magazine. “He had an assistant pick up the diamond engagement ring in Los Angeles and fly down to Argentina with it.”

But a Pitt spokeswoman called the story a lie.

“It’s completely fabricated,” publicist Cindy Guagenti says. “It’s not true. This same rumor keeps perpetuating for months.”

Loose talk

Pop singer/ songwriter Joni Mitchell on being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in the New York Times): “I don’t know whether I should be proud or think it’s silly, since rock ‘n’ roll died so long ago.”

He’ll celebrate somewhere over troubled waters

Jeff Bridges turns 47 today.

Burt’s seeking deliverance from his money problems

No big surprise, but Burt Reynolds filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday. The actor, who has been in financial difficulties since his rancorous divorce from actress Loni Anderson, has an estimated $10 million in assets and owes some $13 million in debts.

They’ll think the movie carries a familiar stink

Turn out Sinbad was just kidding. “It’s a COMEDY,” he told USA Today of his role as a manic mail carrier in the Arnold Schwarzenegger holiday film “Jingle All the Way.” “SOMEONE is going to be made fun of. Next we’ll be wondering, ‘What will the dog lovers think?”’

In the end, he’ll be nothing more than a footnote

James Hewitt, the cad who revealed his affair with Princess Diana for mere money, was convicted on Monday of drunk driving. A British court fined him the equivalent of $758 and revoked his driving privileges for a full year. Hewitt was involved in an August accident.

The deal is they’ll wait until the girls become women

There’s nothing happening between the actors who star on the sitcom “Friends.” “We made a verbal agreement that nothing is going to cross the friendship boundary,” said star David Schwimmer. “Sure, we’re tempted,” added Matthew Perry. “The three girls on our show are very good-looking. But we have a deal.”

Maybe someday Geraldo will end up sleeping with the fishes

The ruling: Thrown out of court. The case: An alleged ex-Mafioso had sued Geraldo Rivera for defamation and breach of contract. The particulars: On a May 1994 episode of “Geraldo,” Rivera allegedly had accused Sonny Gibson of sexual harassment and rape. Gibson claimed he lost three movie roles because of the accusations.
