Madonna, Mariah Receiving Awards

Entertainment News Wire

Madonna and Mariah Carey are scheduled to receive special awards at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Madonna will be given Billboard’s Artist Achievement Award, which recognizes an artist’s popularity, record sales and career accomplishments. The Artist Achievement Award has been bestowed upon only three other artists: Eric Clapton, Janet Jackson and Rod Stewart, who is scheduled to perform tonight.

Carey will be honored for setting a new chart record with the song “One Sweet Day.” The duet with Boyz II Men spent sixteen weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart.

Neither Carey nor Madonna is scheduled to perform at the awards show, which will be broadcast live Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fox. (The broadcast will be tape delayed on the West Coast.)
