Panamanian Alex Solis won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in a vote by his peers. The award is given annually to a rider whose career and character are a tribute to thoroughbred racing.
A billboard with a stark drawing of the Cleveland Indians’ mascot and the words “Smile for Racism” will not be installed or funded by the Cleveland Institute of Art. Edgar Heap of Birds, an artist in Norman, Okla., designed the billboard to protest Chief Wahoo, the baseball team’s red-faced, grinning mascot. Several American Indian groups have denounced the mascot as racist.
In Tuesday night’s fifth go-round in the Thomas & Mack Center at Las Vegas, Australian saddle bronc rider Glenn O’Neill cashed in for $11,653 with his first-place 86 ride on Lonesome Me Skoal at the National Finals Rodeo. In bull riding, Myron Duarte of Peyton, Colo., was first.
