New Rules Will Be Enforced Next Year

Compiled From Wire Services

The Idaho Transportation Department will be enforcing new rules in 1997 as a result of laws passed by the Legislature this year.

Parents who are behind on their child-support payments could have their driver’s licenses taken away.

Parents who are 90 days or $2,000 behind in payments are in danger of having their licenses suspended. Notices will be sent to the delinquent parent, who has 21 days to appeal the suspension at a hearing before the Department of Health and Welfare. If no appeal is filed, the suspension will go into effect.

Also new on the books is a release of liability law that protects motor vehicle owners.

When the owner of a motor vehicle sells or transfers a vehicle, the owner cannot be held liable if negligence in the subsequent operation of the motor vehicle results in the death or injury of a person or property.

Anyone who sells or transfers a vehicle will have to submit a release of liability statement to the Idaho Transportation Department within five days of the transaction.
