Kevin McClatchy has lost one of his biggest investors in his bid to buy the Pittsubugh Pirates as metals dealer William Snyder withdrew his $5 million investment three days before McClatchy’s final paperwork was due to be filed with Major League Baseball. … Ben Brown, an assistant track coach at Cal State Fullerton, who won a gold medal on the 1,600-meter relay team at the 1976 Olympics, died in a car accident in Fullerton, Calif. He was 42.

At Austin, Texas, C.K. Moore of Chehalis, Wash., bowled the ninth televised perfect game in PBA history at the Columbia 300 Open. It sent Moore into the finals, where he defeated Butch Soper. … At Las Vegas, Kevin Kelley outboxed Louis Espinoza and won a unanimous decision in a 12-round featherweight bout between two former world champions.

Montana State athletic director Chuck Lindemenn thinks his school’s cross-state rival may have used questionable recruiting practices in luring a Colorado athlete to the University of Montana. Lindemenn saw a Denver Post article quoting Lakewood, Colo., quarterback Sean Davis as saying he was going to Montana because, “They throw the ball 60 times a game and their quarterback is graduating. Also, they are moving up to Division I in two years and have a great forestry department.” Lindemenn questioned why UM would be telling recruits about future Division I-A status, when the school has not informed the league. … Walter Payton Award winner Dave Dickenson of Montana is one of 27 quarterbacks invited to the NFL Combine Feb. 9-11.
