Gingrich To Appear On ‘Murphy Brown’
House Speaker Newt Gingrich is following in his sister’s footsteps. Just weeks after the lesbian activist Candace Gingrich turned up on NBC’s “Friends,” her older brother is going before the cameras today to tape an episode of CBS’ “Murphy Brown.”
The bit revolves around Murphy’s (Candice Bergen) appearance at the Gridiron dinner in Washington, where politicos and reporters skewer each other good-naturedly.
After leaving the stage, where she gets a few laughs at the House speaker’s expense, Brown runs into Gingrich. Brown jokes about some of the shots she took and then gets into a minor debate over some political issue. She also jokes that she hopes he won’t try to change the First Amendment.
Gingrich then walks away and is heard saying in a serious tone that changing the First Amendment is something they should look into back at the office.
CBS’ hasn’t yet scheduled the show, which will also feature some real-life TV personalities, including “CBS This Morning” host Paula Zahn. However, it’s likely to show up during the May sweeps, a quarterly ratings period used by local stations to set advertising rates.
