Principal’s Demotion Denounced
The demotion of Sandpoint High School Principal A.C. Woolnough prompted a contingent of parents, teachers and students to lash out at school board members Tuesday night.
Nearly 100 people at the meeting, including about 35 teachers, wanted Woolnough reinstated.
“We are upset with the recent decision … and the way it was handled. We strongly urge you to reconsider,” said teacher Ray Holt. He spoke on behalf of the high school staff and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Woolnough headed the high school since 1992. The board voted 4-0 last week to oust him at the end of the year and give him a teaching position. The board cited philosophical differences with Woolnough.
The decision surprised many teachers and parents. They commended Woolnough’s job performance and credited him with turning around the troubled high school.
“This decision by the school board without consultation with parents and teachers is an outrage,” said parent Nick Baran. Several people questioned how the board evaluated Woolnough without consulting any teachers. Others were angry Woolnough wasn’t given the opportunity to meet with the board.
“Everyone has a right to be heard before their livelihood is destroyed,” said Steve Verby, an attorney representing Woolnough. Two parents came to the board’s defense, saying discipline problems at the high school are being ignored.
“I’m here to say there are extreme problems at the high school. I question sending my kids there every day,” said Sally Churchill.
Board members did not respond to comments from the audience. They also declined to give specific reasons for demoting Woolnough.
Woolnough will have an opportunity to respond in writing to his evaluation. He may also request a board hearing to appeal the decision.
