Census Weighs In On State Of Food

Rick Bonino Food Editor

If you’re looking for lots of Mexican restaurants, try New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. As for seafood, Maine’s lobster land can’t be beat.

Those are among the more predictable findings from a Census Bureau study reported by the National Restaurant Association. But there are a few twists, too.

The state with the largest concentration of Chinese restaurants among its eateries isn’t California - which ranks 10th - but Maryland, followed by Rhode Island and Utah. South Dakota, not Nebraska, is tops for steak, while Italian restaurants are most common in Washington, D.C.

Our Washington, by the way, ranks ninth on the list of likely locations for Mexican food.

Golden memories

Remember the time Aunt Fanny forgot her glasses when she was babysitting, and she picked up the Dijon instead of the Vick’s and started smearing it all over your chest? That’s the type of tale that just might be a winner in the French’s “Mustard Memories” contest, for essays of 100 words or less about memorable mustard moments.

Grand prize is a trip to the International Mustard Celebration from Feb. 7-11 in California’s Napa Valley. Everyone who enters gets a French’s hat, discount airline coupons and more mustard goodies.

Postmark deadline is Jan. 22. Send entries to: French’s Mustard, 411 Park St., Upper Montclair, NJ 07043.

Hello, Mr. Chips

If you’re more partial to chocolate chip cookies, and you’ve got a killer recipe, Honey and Larry Zisman would like to hear from you.

The Princeton, N.J., couple previously published “The 47 Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in the World.” Now they’ve set their sights higher with a sequel: “57 More of the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in the World.”

Winners will have their names printed in the book along with their recipe, and will receive a free copy and a serving dish to use for future cookie creations. Send recipes by Feb. 1 to: Chocolate Chip Cookies Forever, P.O. Box 7231, Princeton, NJ 08543.

How many carats?

Remember that carrot cake cooking contest last spring that had diamond jewelry as prizes? No, you didn’t win. But you can get a copy of the grand prize winner - Taste of the Islands Carrot Cake, from the pastry chef at the Four Seasons Resort in Maui (isn’t living in Hawaii reward enough?) - along with recipes from the eight other contest finalists by writing to: Carrot Cake Recipes, 531 D North Alta Avenue, Dinuba, CA 93618.
