Trails Reports

North Cascades, east slope

Ranger District contacted: Methow Valley, Winthrop office (509) 996-4000. Snow level: 4,000-4,500 feet, rising to 5,000 in area. Notes: Day hikers can find wildflowers and open waters along the short trail to Beaver Lake in the Twisp Valley. More adventurous outings can be found on the Eagle Lake Trail, which is snow-free for 3 miles but passable with care beyond that.

Alpine Lakes, east slope

Ranger District contacted: Leavenworth, (509) 782-1413. Snow level: 4,500 feet, some deep valley patches. Notes: They’re not USFS trails, but the Manastash Ridge Trail, the Umtanum Ridge Crest Trail offer excellent hiking opportunities. The first is 4 miles (round trip) and the second is 6 miles (rt). Both are in the high desert east of Ellensburg.

South Cascades, east slope

Ranger District contacted: Wind River, (509) 427-5645. Snow level: 4,500-5,000 feet. Notes: The Lewis River Falls and the Lower Falls Trail offer excellent, short (3 to 5 miles) day hikes through cool forest and along the river. Both trails offer excellent views of beautiful waterfalls. Both are free of snow and clear for hikers.
