More Funds Needed To Speed Restoration

Restoration work on the ancient temples of the Acropolis will take another 35 to 40 years unless the government increases funding, the project chief said Thursday.

Efforts to restore the columned Parthenon and other 2,500-year-old temples, scarred by pollution and earlier repairs, began in 1975.

The restoration project has an annual budget of about $4.5 million, mostly from the government. Additional funding could speed the project significantly, completing the work in about 12 years, said Haralambos Bouras.
