Titans Send Brief Halloween Chill Up Shadle Park’s Spine

Two quick third-period touchdowns by University High put a Halloween scare into Shadle Park.

But ultimately, Thursday night’s 49-21 loss was no treat for the Titans.

Trailing 34-7 at intermission, U-Hi recovered a fumble at the 10, and three plays later Jared Garner caught a 5-yard pass for the score.

On its next possession, University went 71 yards in 11 plays. Included were seven carries for 46 yards by Tim Buchanan, culminating in his tackle-shredding 8-yard touchdown run.

That made the score 34-21, and University had hope - but only briefly. Shadle answered with a touchdown in just over a minute and regained control of the game.

The Highlanders had scored on five successive first-half possessions. For the second straight week Shadle ball carriers rushed more than 60 times against a Valley school.

They piled up nearly 400 ground yards against the Titans, whose season record fell to 1-7.

Buchanan finished the game with 76 yards rushing on 19 carries. U-Hi had 190 yards of total offense.

The Titans’ season ends next Friday against Rogers at Albi Stadium. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

Titan soccer advances

University’s soccer team hosts a rematch with Ferris Monday at 3 p.m. for a berth in the State AAA soccer tournament.

The two teams last met at U-Hi Oct. 18 in a driving hailstorm. The Titans won to ultimately secure home-field advantage for the playoffs.

Both teams won first-round matches on Thursday. University broke a 0-0 halftime tie to beat Lewis and Clark 2-0.

Alicia Crowe scored on an assist from Sara Streufert 67 minutes into the 80-minute match.

With time running out, Sara Nelson took a pass from Megan Black and put the game away.

Monday’s winner plays at Mead Wednesday for tournament seeding against top two finishers in the Big Nine League.

We meet again

For the second straight year, the East Valley and West Valley soccer teams meet in the first round of Frontier League playoffs.

The two square off at 11 a.m. today at Riverside with the winner advancing to the finals.

More often than not their regular season games have ended in ties. This year the two teams each won 1-0.

The Eagles placed second, a point behind four-time regular season champion Riverside/Deer Park.

East Valley has been district runnerup to Riverside/Deer Park for the past three years.

Knight volleyball team unbeaten

Favored to win Frontier League volleyball at season’s outset, East Valley did so with a flourish.

The Knights, last year’s runnerup and ultimate state qualifier, completed a 12-0 league season with two victories this week.

As league champion, EV hosts a four-team district playoff on next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9.

That tournament this year qualifies two teams to the State AA tournament.

District, indeed

Central Valley’s volleyball season came to an end, but not before the team reached Greater Spokane League district playoffs for the first time since 1991.

On Thursday, the Bears were beaten by the Greater Spokane League’s third-place finisher, Mead, 15-6, 15-10.

The loss capped off a busy week for the Bears. On Monday they lost to Gonzaga Prep and finished in a three-way tie for sixth place at 4-12.

On Tuesday they won a doubleelimination tiebreaker with North Central and Shadle Park to qualify for the district event.

CV beat North Central 15-3, lost to Shadle Park 15-11, ousted the Indians 15-12, then beat Shadle 15-6 and 15-10 to break the sixth-place deadlock.
