Soccer goalie Ricardo Pinto had surgery Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro to remove a blood clot from his brain, two days after he was beaten by opposing fans during a first-division game. Pinto was listed in serious condition at the Cajuru Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil, where he plays for the Atletico-Parana club. … Richard Mayo, the first American to medal in the Olympic pentathlon, died Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 94. Mayo, a retired Army general and Boca Raton activist, earned a bronze medal in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. … Wright State basketball coach Ralph Underhill has been cited in Beavercreek, Ohio, for petty theft for allegedly shoplifting vitamins. Police said Underhill selected six bottles of vitamins but paid for only one, concealing the other five… . Luman Harris, who managed the Atlanta Braves to their first divisional title in 1969, died Monday in Pell City, Ala., after a long struggle with diabetes. He was 81. Harris was a pitcher in the 1940s for the Philadelphia Athletics.
