Post Falls Leaves Sp Wet, Beaten

Jonathan Hay Correspondent

After a tough loss last week, the Post Falls Trojans were looking to redeem themselves against Shadle Park. It took a big effort, but the Trojans desire for redemption was fulfilled with a 20-12 homecoming victory Friday night.

“Our pride was wounded last week, but we were much better this time,” Post Falls coach Jerry Lee said.

Josh Mort ran for 225 yards on 25 carries and scored twice for Post Falls in a game that was turned into a ground battle because of heavy rain.

The Trojans’ first score came on a 17-yard catch by Chad Quesnell. Quesnell out-jumped two Shadle Park defenders on a lob pass from Adam Fehling. In his first start of the season, Fehling completed 9 of 18 passes for 133 yards.

The pass was the only score of the first half as the Trojans were having trouble finding the end zone when scoring opportunities arose.

The Highlanders scored first in the second half on a 1-yard plunge from Jeff Lafferty, but the snap for the extra point was dropped to make the score 7-6.

As the rain poured, both teams struggled offensively until Mort scored his first touchdown on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Mort was hit at the 5-yard line but dragged Shadle Park defenders into the end zone to put his team up 13-6.

“I was real proud of the way Josh stepped up and ran hard when we needed him,” Lee said.

After a Fehling fumble, the Highlanders scored again on a 20-yard pass to Ben Pate.

Pate had dropped a pass in the end zone on the drive before, but redeemed himself with a tough over-the-shoulder catch. The extra-point snap was fumbled for the second time, leaving Post Falls ahead 13-12.

The teams traded possessions as the Post Falls defensive line allowed Shadle Park quarterback Kris Walters very little time to pass. “Our kids came through in the second half,” Lee said.

“Our defense put a lot of pressure on them.”

Mort added a 30-yard touchdown run with 1:24 left in the game. The win helped erase memories of the Trojans’ 49-6 loss last week to Lewiston.

“Our kids showed a lot of character the way they played tonight and proved they really are a good football team,” Jerry Lee said.
