Sugar Ray Comes Back, Again

Compiled From Wire Services

Sugar Ray Leonard will unretire for the fifth time to take on Hector “Macho” Camacho, 34, and also well past his prime, probably in February.

“Everything in principle is done,” said Mike Acri, promoter for Camacho. “About 85 to 90 percent (of the details) are done. We don’t have a site and a date yet.” Acri said the site possibilities include Madison Square Garden, where Leonard announced his retirement the last time after a bruising defeat in 1991; Las Vegas, Atlantic City and San Antonio.

Leonard (36-2-1), who lives in the Los Angeles area, said recently that he wanted to fight again to help launch a Sugar Ray Leonard Youth Foundation. “There’s nothing like boxing to give you the forum to do that,” he said. “I’m in good shape. Look at George Foreman. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t box.”

Leonard reportedly earned about $55 million of some $90 million in his career in his last five fights.

Four months after saying he would not fight again unless the opponent was George Foreman, Larry Holmes Jr. announced he will fight Brian Nielsen of Denmark on Jan. 24 at Copenhagen.

Holmes, a grandfather who will be 47 on Nov. 3, said one of his reasons for coming back was that the 12-round bout will be for the fringe IBO championship held by the unbeaten Nielsen.

“It’s another title, and it’s a chance to help that organization become legitimate,” Holmes said.
