U.S. Men Reach Title Game
The United States stayed on course for a fifth straight World University Games men’s basketball title by defeating Italy 67-51 to reach the final.
Meanwhile, world champion Marius Corbett of South Africa won the javelin gold medal with a throw of 283 feet, 9 inches. In swimming, Japan’s women had two 1-2 finishes and Cuba also won two gold medals, including one by Olympic bronze medalist Neisser Bent in the men’s 100-meter backstroke.
Eastern Michigan’s Earl Boykins scored 17 points as the U.S. basketball team overcame a shaky start and extended its University Games winning streak to 31.
